Creaky Rear End

I recently picked up a 03 4runner 2WD V8. Everything seems solid exept for a noise I hear from the rear. On cold starts, when I let off the brake, there is a creak. Letting off the brake quicker quiets it down. When I slowly release the brake the creak is loud & drawn out. This happens both in drive or reverse. Once driving the creak disappears. I don't believe this is the "clunk" that many discuss.

Has anyone encountered this? Any insight is appreciated!

I had a similar issue not too long ago. Turned out the spare tire had to be cinched up a little bit. Break out the tools that came with your truck and tighten it to see if that helps.

Sounds like sticky brakes to me. It's normal when they're cold.

Could also be the E brake not fully disengaging. :happens:

Did tighten up the spare, but there was no change. I agree the brakes may be causing the noise. The sound is similar to driving with the E brake engaged. Again, only happens with a slow release of the brake. Perhaps the brakes are sticking as mentioned. Would this be a sign of a frozen caliper? Thanks for the help.

I'm want to tell you it's normal but then there will that guy that says his doesn't do it.

In the mornings, particularly damp cold mornings my car makes creaking noises and they come from the rear brakes. They are quite audible and if the right amount of pressure is applied - you can skip along and actually hear the sticktion (yes it's a real word) happening.

Most of my cars brakes make some audible sound in the morning.
