Creeping forward at stop lights

After looking at the tach today I am convinced that the suggestion about the AC is on target. RPM is 600 with no AC and about 850 with. If AC cycles on at a light the creep is possible because the brain is already sure that the vehicle is stopped and not expecting movement. Guessing I have a 600 rpm foot on the brake. This must be something newer to kick the rpm up since, as I mentioned, I never had it in over 20 other cars. Not the worst thing to find out about but it was unexpected to have to retrain myself to push the shift into neutral at lights

the idle bumps up slightly to compensate for the extra load of running the compressor. that's not anything new. my 1985 4runner does the exact same thing. though, its a manual, so there is no creep.

I have noticed this with my 06 as well.

I think they just have a much tighter torque converter than previous vehicles you(and others) have driven.
 
The other car has very touchy brakes (Infiniti Q40), and requires far less pressure to stop/hold. I just attributed my light pressing on the 4R to my time in the Q.

It's a quirk of the hydraulically assisted system and how it was programmed in the 4Runners.

I have to be cognizant of this issue also. Every other car I have had with an auto trans, including a 4th gen, required much less pedal pressure to keep the vehicle stopped. I figured it was factory designed and like Cymon, also thought the pressure valving could be advantageous for off road conditions. :noidea:
It is a minor annoyance and I must lighten my foot substantially when driving my weekend ride. The first stop in that car is usually pretty abrupt! :)

It's not a pressure issue, it's a pedal travel issue. The pressure required to depress the pedal throughout the entire stroke is fairly the same, this means that the pedal will have about 40lbs resistance to pressing it throughout the stroke (compared to other vehicles where it gets progressively harder to press, though 40lbs is most likely not the right number, I'm just using it for example purposes). So at any point in the stroke you're still applying about the same pressure, which means that it's easy to misjudge how much brake pedal you're applying if you're not used to it. If you're not at the right point in the pedal travel then the piston rod in the master cylinder is not actually applying force to the calipers and thus it can creep forward.
 
No creep on our 2016 SR5 to report. Only the squishy air sound. I'll ask my wife as she drives it as often as I do.

She says no.

If you're a heavy brake pedal guy you're not gonna notice it, if you're a "I'm barely gonna engage the brakes at the stop light" guy you'll probably notice it. Like I said it's a issue of pushing the pedal all the way down. Most people use increasing resistance in the pedal to gauge when the brakes apply rather than feeling it, so with the 4Runner's rather consistent pedal effort it's easy to be too light at a stop light.

After having an aftermarket clutch on a Mustang, I'm all too familiar with having to mash the shit out of something, lol.
 
I get the creep also. Never happens in any other car that I have driven. I just depress the brake harder whenever I drive the 4runner. Glad it seems normal for the 4runner and not a defect.
 
2015 tp here and I get it. Looked down one time at a stop light and looked back up only to see I was creeping out into traffic. No bueno. Also came close to rear ending a few cars. Now I make sure to jam on it

Not sure this applies here since the creeping starts after coming to a complete stop. That's why it is annoying - your brain has registered that the vehicle is stopped and then it starts moving again when you are occupied with other items. I do not think I am applying x number of lbs of force and then after stopping reducing it to y lbs.

right. you are maintaining x amount of force. then the compressor cycles on, the engine rpms come up slightly, and the added torque from that overcomes your previous x amount of force, and you start to roll forward.

note, that even if you do not have the AC ON, but have your climate controls in a defrost position, the compressor will still cycle ON occasionally.
 
wow I am glad I found this thread. Out of all the vehicles I have driven, this is the only vehicle that creeps. I warned my girl and whoever drives to press a tad bit harder at stop lights. I find it odd that this would happen considering they installed an emergency braking system in the 4 runner that makes my brake pedal fart.
 
Reviving and old thread all. I will come to a stop sign, to a full stop and then notice at times that the old runner will start creeping on me. Yes I can press the brakes harder and eliminate the issue but it still catches me off guard at times. This can happen regardless of whether or not the A/C is on. My understanding is this is a known issue and can be addressed simply by applying more pressure but.....I believe I have noticed this issue happening less, or not at all, after I grease the driveshaft (6 zerks u joint/slide yoke). I have had my 4runner for under a year now and have only completed the service twice but both times I noticed not only the "clunk" going away but also seems to eliminate the vehicle creeping.

So all of you knowledgeable 4runner gurus....is that even possible? Could performing the driveshaft service have an impact on the brake creep?

Sorry guys just noticed this was 5th gen...not sure why it came up under 4th gen search? Anyways this is regarding a 4th gen and have no idea if it would apply to 5th gen.

I’ll review the mushy brakes thread as well but this creep appears to be the only issue I have with my newer 19 ORP. Curious to know if a simple driveshaft lube may fix it, it can be unnerving inching forward when you don’t expect to.
 
My 19 TRDORP also creeps- has caught me off guard a few times.
I too have looked up just in time to realize I was rolling slowly.
Like others I never had it on any other vehicle- and I've owned over 50 of them in my lifetime.
My 2011 FJ I still own does not do it.
I don't think the driveshaft has anything to do with it.
It is all about the mushy long travel brake pedal IMO. I love my 4R but the mushy long travel brake pedal is hands down it's worst "feature".
 
My 2020 ORP Does that too

This is not my first Toyota. My 2020 4RORP creeps too! I have < 2K miles, and bought new with 2 miles on it.
 
my 2020 4runner creeps and so does my wifes LX570.. 2019 Tundra we had also creeped.. just need a heavier foot on the pedal.
