My cruise is the zoomiest cruise control I have ever experienced. We have a main tollway that has some ups and downs varying in elevation of between 20' and 30'. Locked in at 65 mph, the truck will downshift sometimes to 3rd going uphill. by the time I reach the top, all of maybe 4 seconds, I am doing 75mph.

My Land Rover had a similar problem and they had some reset for it that completely smoothed it out. Any clues? I will search now, but my search skills are worse than the cruise control. Feel free to bash me, but go ahead and send me the answer too, please.

I stopped using CC on mine because I've found it to be terrible at maintaining speed unless you are driving on completely flat land. I've also found that all the crazy downshifting to 3rd gear and rocketing up to the 75mph, really hits the MPH. I get better mileage not using CC.

exactly this.

i've never been a fan of the CC to begin with, but the longer trips that 4r enabled me to make could be easier with this feature on.
 
I have not noticed major issues with mine. However I still do not like using CC because it messes up my MPGs
 
Typical Toyota programming. My 3rd Gen did this, other Toyotas do it too. Practically red-lining just to get up a hill. The tC was a manual, so cruise worked great, 5th gear all the time...
 
Learn how to manipulate it so it stays in 5th with the torque converter locked. Accelerate right before starting to ascend by giving it about 4-5 clicks and as it begins to lose speed, albeit slowly, gradually slow it down by the same amount of clicks.

I guess I always thought the whole point of cruise control was to set it and forget it. If I want to mess with something, I'll leave it off and manipulate the gas pedal.
 
Had mine on its first 500 mile road trip.....it does go +/- 5 mph....like others, I just tap the cruise button to adjust.....yes I have had tighter cruise controls before but it is not an issue for me.
 
It just makes me feel like there is a fix for this. Heck, if Land Rover can fix a problem, one would certainly think Toyota can.
 
My 4 runner CC is far, far better than my Chevy Truck, Ford Truck, and Wifes honda Accord are.

Say what you want, it works great and i travel hilly portions of I-30 daily. nothing horrible, but lots of long steady ~70-100ft climbs over and over.

of course it's going to downshift on big hills.
 
OK, Arkansas. I get it, and would expect a downshift, but i am talking about gentle rolling hills with very little elevation change. My kicks down to third with max throttle like a scalded dog!!
 
I rarely use my CC in town, but when i travel from Dallas to Houston, it works very well. Granted, that's a pretty flat drive. :)
 
The CC in my Trail works acceptably well. When it downshifts on an uphill, the speed sometimes goes about 5mph over where it's set, then drops back after the upshift at the top of the hill.
