Custom sub enclosure under factory shelf 4th gen

I want to upgrade beyond my factory JBL system. Considering swapping out everything... I'm looking at all the easy room under the shelf in the back. Anyone done a custom enclosure for a single 10" or 12" or pair of 8"s? Thinking a band pass or vented enclosure the vents to the rear.

I've searched here and car audio forums and haven't seen much. Perhaps I'm searching wrong?

Previously I've had a single 12" in a vented enclosure but it takes up valuable real estate. I'm not sure a JBL sub upgrade would really give me the sound I'm looking for.

I've heavily considered doing this....but I'm not in search of pounding bass and the factory sub swap was plenty for me. I searched around before swapping out the stock sub and didn't find much either.

I looked into this as well when I had my 03 sport with the double decker shelf and the stock JBL 8" I ended up just buying a JL 8w3v2 instead and using a stock enclosure on my new 08 SR5

If you plan to go bandpass then plan on using up a lot of space. Bandpasses typically take up more space then any other type of box.

When your planning on doing a stereo install you need to think about what type of music you listen to mostly and whether your going for sound quality or sound pressure level. If your into the heavy bass from rap music then I'd for sure go for a ported or vented enclosure and tuned to a specific frequency. These types of boxes will be larger then a sealed box. Bandpasses also work well with a rap type of music but from my research I wouldn't use it if you plan to listen to a diverse range of music. If your into rock I would go for a sealed box. It will take up less volume and it will be a tighter punchy sound.
