CV Boot Leaking, Awesome...

Can you explain this? Got me a little confused.

If the rim was smaller - say 16". the center point of the axle sits lower, dropping the angle of the axle. Just an observation from seeing pics of others axles while i was researching doing the axle and looking at mine after.

I don't see how wheel size is going to affect static CV angle. Think of the hubs being on Blocks, you can stack the blocks as high as you want, but its the weight of the vehicle pressing down against the springs and suspension that creates the angle.

Yeah, I think you could be seeing an optical illusion. If I had 33" tires on 20" rims and 33" tires on 16" rims, the center is still the center. Am I missing something?

The CV angle only changes when the suspension cycles (as the springs/shocks compress and extend). You could put clown car wheels on the truck and it would still have the same CV angle.

Only a diff drop, spacer lift, drop spindle, different springs, etc will impact the suspension geometry and therefore the CV angles.

Oh, man! My CV boots are also leaking, two of them in both sides. I am planing to go to shop just replace the boots. Most the mechanics don't like this idea. May be they just want a easy job. I heard many of the aftermarket axles are not as good as original. I will just replace the boots to see how long they can last.

That is exactly the reason they don't want to replace the boots. It is much easier to just replace the shaft. Dealership techs have followed this model for years that they just replace parts instead of fixing things. One of my local dealers won't even turn rotors. They only replace them. They claim because of liability issues.

As for aftermarket parts, it depends. Generally you get what you pay for.

Yeah, I spent a good amount of time fixing a few torn boots. The toughest part was, there are a few different types of clamps, and clamping tools, and no one stocks the good tools for them, no one stocks good boots, the boots I ordered were $20 each. $40 total to reboot a $80 axle!

But I found the boots later on amazon and rock auto for $10. Anyway. I ramble. I hate cv axles now.

I just learned from Erik, the car guy, if we really want to same money, just let it go. Never bother to fix the boots. From you hear the noise while your are turning to the axle completely fail, it really takes a long long time. Just wait, and replace with a new axle long time later because the price is same to just replace the boot and axle.

Yeah, but the grease flinging around in there sucks, and I want my car to be squared away. I don't think I could mentally handle letting the boot go till failure.

Oh man I just replaced both axles I think in the spring and just popped the drivers side boot out while doing a full lock left turn on level pavement. I got the re-man axles at O'riely.
Think this is a design flaw?(I have no lift.) Can I use the ops new type CVJ Axles without a lift?

Yeah you are right. Just like when you break your arm. Why go to the Doctor? It will heal on it's own. I mean, what is the worst that can happen?

I don't plan on fooling with this again until say maybe first of next summer but in regards to my question of using the ops axle company with the longer boots on a non lifted do you all see any problems?
I would think no problem but just wanted to see what you all thought?

Thanks regarding these axles:

Just got the CVJ axles today, the boot is twice as long as stock and seems to be a better material. Looks sweet too I think.

The only problem I could think of is if the boot bunches up because it's not lifted, and then scrapes against another part. There isn't a ton of clearance between the boot and other parts.

Thanks Brownfaux that makes sense and I will keep in mind. I think the oem size is very tight boot to me and apparently may be too tight/short and may also be made of to stiff a material?

Like qingyuwu mentioned it should take a long time before you actually need to replace the axle but I just don't like the thought of it all exposed and so vulnerable to the elements thus potentially weakening, rusting the joint and then all of a sudden a unforeseen emergency maneuver occurs and it snaps causing you to loose that extra 2 seconds of better control of your vehicle!

Ok OCD and I need to think about the more important things in life and be thankful of so much.

***HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!

If it were me I would order a new boot kit off amazon. I paid $20 each for my boot kits, which is a rip off when a new axle is $80. Kits on amazon are as low as $10

I think the oem boot is fine, not too stiff or small. I'm lifted and my rebooted axle is fine.

Re booting is a freaking adventure though. The clamps for the boots suck, it's messy, my axles were different, in that both sides came off one but not the other, so I had to remove two boots to reboot one side.
