How long do you think your plastic zip ties are going to hold?

I don't know how long they're supposed to last but my cv axles have had the same harbor freight zip ties since 2015. I'm not recommending zip ties if you have the means to install the appropriate clamps but I wasn't able to get the new OEM clamps installed with the tools I had available at the time. I bought cv boot clamp pliers a few months later & been meaning to replace them with the OEM clamps I have for the last 4 years. I've used zip ties on another 3rd gen and those cv axles still have the same ones since 2016. They seem to hold up fine if the correct clamps are unable to be installed.

Interesting. I honestly would never use even Duponts 66 nylons zip ties for cv joint clamp. :] I am glad they held for you the risk of that zip tie breaking or even leaking grease out would be extremely high in my opinion. Especially in the winter when ice builds up on the axles [ if you live in the rust snow belts] I seen ice and snow build up significantly on the cv joints and boots and even cause slight balance issues until it warms up some and melts off.

Anyways, to answer the question of this thread title

SST 09521-24010 is the tool for the small clamp

Clearance check tool is SST 09240-00020
Clearance of .8mm [.0031 in] or less

Oh dear. No way does that match the FSM..LOL You 100% sure those are OEM boots and OEM Bands?? or is someone selling you an OEM Boot with a different Band? Very common for Ebay and Amazon to do things like this.. :-( Sorry, I couldn't be more helpful.. I haven't ran into clamps like that yet. Glad you found a tool for them.

I did send an email to my dealer parts department asking about those pliers for cv joint boots several days ago. So far all I got was crickets. It would be a different sst part number for sure then FSM mentions. Most have changed the setup of bands at some point. Most of my rigs all have original front axles still in them but the one as the boots got damaged and starting leaking grease. So I swapped the axles and seals when I had the half shafts out. :]
