Cylinder Misfire Fixed- Thanks!

Just registered to thank everyone on here for being a valuable resource. I used to have a Land Cruiser and am used to utilizing the Ih8mud forum- since I got my 1996 4Runner a year and a half ago I've relied upon Ih8mud for any routine maintenance issues I've had (they have a section for 4Runners). This particular problem required the expertise of Toyota-4Runner.org and I'm grateful.

Anyway, I got a P0304 DTC (cylinder #4 misfire) last Monday coupled with a shuddering/shaking on acceleration. Troubleshooting in the next couple days proved difficult to recreate the issue- on a cold start everything functioned correctly, but park the warm vehicle for 10 minutes and upon restart the symptoms appear. It was a relatively even loss of power and shaking throughout the RPM range, but more noticeable above 50 MPH.

I began with new plugs- I was due anyway. That failed to address the issue, so new wires went in next. I swapped the coil packs, as suggested here, and the same cylinder misfired. At this point I took her to a mechanic since I don't have a garage and it's been cold. I wasn't up for removing the intake manifold but my mechanic did and checked the resistance on injectors 1, 2, 3 & 4. All four hit between 13.2 and 13.6 ohms- at this point my mechanic was reluctant to replace the fuel injector because he wasn't convinced it was a mechanical issue.

We compromised- since the manifold was out he swapped injectors #1 and #4- and installed new o-rings on #4. The manifold was put back together and the DTC changed to P0301 for a #1 cylinder misfire. R2'd the injector with a new Toyota one and now she runs perfect again. Wanted to share my experience with everyone because my mechanic has never replaced a fuel injector in a 4Runner and his instinct was that there was something else wrong. Thanks to everyone for getting my cylinder misfire fixed in 1 trip to the shop!

Kudos to you sir!

If only more members would do what you just did, this would be an incredible resource for the rest of us. So many threads go silent once the OP fixes their problem.

1996 Misfire, or Something Else?

Unfortunately I am unable to start a New Thread because I have "not had enough posts". So I end up asking my question as replies to other peoples questions. So far I have not received any responses. This is my 3rd try. If I am doing something wrong, please let me know.

I have a 1996 Toyota 4Runner, 3.4

The truck hesitates very badly when getting into the gas pedal, such as starting off or going uphill. This has been going on for a little over a year.

I have replaced the following:
- all 3 coils
- all spark plug wires
- all spark plugs (double electrode)
- all 6 fuel injectors
- both O2 sensors
- fuel filter
- crankshaft position sensor
- ran 2 bottles of 44K

None of this has made a difference. In fact the problem seems to be getting worse.

Any suggestions?

Ok. Any codes/ check engine light? Losing coolant?

Perform the basics such as a compression test and leak down test to test for engine integrity so to speak.

Assuming you have no codes, think about your fuel pump. Sounds like fuel starvation to me. Also the MAF could be at issue. Disconnect the MAF and see if it changes.

I would check the MASS air flow sensor to see if it is really dirty and the IAC valve may be sticking. If it is having problems switching circuits, I think that will cause hesitation. Clean the Throttle Body good and IAC to see if it changes anything. Sounds like you've changed out some expensive unneeded parts... I would be more inclined to think it would be something pretty simple if it is doing it off idle and not under load in the middle of the RPM range
