D Farms' Build thread: "Goldilocks"

I believe it was a combination of things. I noticed that the 4.30 ring gear was thicker and more angled than my 3.90 gear, I believe the angling makes the gear stronger under load. secondly the passenger tire was spinning and the drivers tire was stuffed and not able to spin, I believe the passenger tire was spinning and then suddenly caught a rock, then the ring gear suddenly stopped and the pinion tried to keep moving, and broke the teeth. oddly I pulled right out of this spot with a bit of maneuvering, and noticed the clicking afterwards. if i had a locker the tires would have been spinning together and this would not have happened.

thatll make it chooch.

Haha wow you did a number on that ring! and I though mine was bad with 3 teeth gone! It's funny it happened to both of us only a couple days apart too.

Anyway the reason I dropped in, is to ask what tires you are currently running? The front page says you are running 315/75r16 KO2s, but somewhere I say it said you have 37's?

I dont have 37s but i can fit them. in fact at some point when I wear these 315s out id like to get some 17" rims and get the ko2s in the 37x12.5r17. I hear bfg runs a little small diameter wise anyways so the 37 will probably be more like a 36 but who knows.

finally got a little time to work on my rear bumper again. i was able to bridge the gap between the wing and the mount. my favorite method for fabrication, other than water jetting and press braking of course, is using foam core and plasma cutting the shapes out. basically to fill the gap I made triangles of foam core and then grooved and bent them, and it turned out great, i cut the end of the rectangular tube and gained some more clearance and the angles look very good, and its going to be very very strong now. also i reinstalled the panhard lift bracket, and after discovering the nasty elocker motor and cleaning it out, i made breather extensions for both the axle and elocker motor using some left over silicone tube. new alternator belt too. and almost forgot, i pressed new bushings into my 5100s, they had worn and were compressing on the drivers side, so that fixed the lean.

pretty much all the bushings in my front end that i havent replaced are toast. so i got this set of poly bushings for $45, which is good since they are poly.

heres the instructions http://www.lcengineering.com/LCInstructions/8481839 Energy.pdf

heyo, nice rig. lovin the front flex. care to share where you got the bushing kit? not seeing anything on LCE or wheeleroffroad. Hoping to start replacing all rubber bushings with poly ones... any advice on where to start as well?

they are the tacoma energy suspension front control arm bushings, you can get them from carID. I also have poly bushings in the rear but i made my own links with bushing cups that are the size for 4th gens so i could fit energy poly bushings in them.

Do you have polys on both ends of your custom rear control arms?

Making some rock sliders, they are 3/16" 2" square tube, and I put them close to the body and angled up fron the frame. the plan is to put a rubber strip where the slider would contact the body in order to move evenly distribute any sort of impact. not that these will be flexing much with 1/2" thick gussets on all 4 legs.

I like it! I really like how close it sits to the body. Keep up the goodwork!

the plan eventually is to make them into boat sides, but that can wait. jeeps actually have rock sliders that go right on the body so I think our rocker panels could support the sliders. having them close and with a rubber bumper all along the slider is kind of a hybrid of the two.

My only fear with them being that close... wouldn't that put a lot of stress on the body mount bolts? Since we're B.o.F. there needs to be and will be some movement between the frame and body. At least the Jeep XJ's are unibody, so they wouldn't have the same issues. My brother in Law had an XJ with the sliders right on the body like that and they worked great though. that's for sure. Keeps them really close.

Might not be an issue, but just figured I'd ask.

No, the slider would still be mostly secured by the frame, but in some situations the slider might contact the body. this would be if the truck is flexed out and starts twisting the frame a bit, also if the truck is resting on the slider only. honestly it wouldnt be a common occurence, just something to think about. also the only real situation where a lot of force would move the slider would be a hard impact or lifting the truck by the slider.
