News on the turd, the head is cracked in every cylinder except the cylinder that the head gasket was leaking into, split from the exhaust valve to the spark plug hole in 5 spots. I need to decide whether to have my head welded up or get a new head on the way, leaning towards the welding at this point.

Ha! I was trying to figure out what I was looking at being new to these engine compartments.
I have a new to me '99 Toyota Surf down here in Mozambique…I guess it's the same creature as these 4Runners - just from Japan, British Isles, etc… I'm from US (Michigan) and love the modding culture of the US. Which is why I joined up with the US 4Runner forum.
Love your build and this is showing me a lot of what can be done with these vehicles. So am grateful for your reply. Right now I'm looking for a few ideas that will help me know what I want to do to my rig over the next 6 months or so. I'm thinking a set of shocks/springs, exterior racks, front and rear bumper, new tires - mods to secure good travel through sparsely populated country and sometimes inhospitable. Might want to beef up some of the 4x4 parts - maybe some gearing and hubs…not really sure about those.

A lot of us here in the US are very jealous of all the cool bits and pieces you guys can get of the Surfs.
Anyways, welcome to the forum, there's a lot of good people with good ideas here. This platform serves as an excellent base for modifications, you just have to figure out which ones fit your wants and needs the best.

There are a few, most notable would be a diesel engine, there are also body parts like the fender mirror, rear spoilers, large window visors, rear mounted spare tire carrier, and clear corner lights.
There's also a few things in the interior, like the field monitoring unit, triple DIN dash panel and adjustable rear seat angles. I believe there's also an available limited slip rear diff.
Some markets also had an optional 3rd row seat I think.

Can you tell me about the Ultragauge vs. the Scangauge2? Any particular benefit for these vehicles getting one or the other? I return to US in Dec and think I'll get one to bring back. This kind of stuff is not cheap over here. I found info on a hypermiler sight that compared the two - but it was esoteric to their obsessions.
How helpful has the Ultragauge been to you? What about some of the current options with bluetooth OBD2 readers that hook up to smart phones - any thoughts about those options?

I'm definitely not the one to ask on that honestly, I only had the thing for like a week and a half then I sold it, lol, it displays a lot of information, none of which was useful to me, definitely a pretty cool piece of kit for 70$ or whatever it was, I have zero experience with the scangauge or any bluetooth readers, I just don't have any need for them, some of the more electronically equipped 4Runners may find them more useful.

Thanks. I'll do another search on the forum for these units. I'm not sure I need one. But I like the idea that out in the middle of nowhere here in Africa I might be able to see some problem arising. Seems like an "ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" in this case. You've been modding this 4R for quite some time. Any particular thoughts you can share, now that you've come this far, about what you believe to have been the best mods and what are not so useful?

I've regretted doing the 3" body lift pretty much since I did it, in the end, 35's are not really worth doing over a 33x12.5, but I got a good deal on them so what can I do... Plans are to ditch the body lift and either do a 1" or chop up the footwells in the front to fit them and get it lower.
The HID projectors are useful, but realistically not worth the hassle I personally went through, it probably would've been way better if I had bought a brand new kit but I digress, I was happier with the output of the 99+ housings and GE nighthawks than I realized at the time, they do look great though.
And every LED conversion I did was a complete waste of time and money, the build quality of the cheap little LED drop in bulbs are absolutely terrible, bascially all of the bulbs I had replaced have been converted back to halogen at this point, I definitely do not recommend doing an LED conversions.
But the mods that I would 100% do again are definitely the Manual hub conversion, I know for a fact my CV's would've been toast long ago if I hadn't done it. I'd also definitely do the OTRATTW switches again, they really are quality and worth the little bit of extra money over cheap parts stores pieces, same goes for the Blue Seas fuse panel, it's made my electrical life a lot easier.
The #1 mod that I love the most though is my rack set-up, I wanted a full length rack ala GOBI or WMW at first, but now I'm very glad I went with the full Yakima setup, it saved me hundreds of dollars, and it is way more modular than a full length rack, I've hauled countless things on my roof, camping equipment, a set of 33" tires for my brother, my spare tire, sheets and sticks of lumber, steel, etc. and having the ability to pick and choose what type of rack I need has been a godsend.

Picked up my head today, looks brand new, can't even tell where they welded up the cracks.
And went ahead and ordered a 1" Body lift, so it's time to start mocking up the front bumper, looks like the crossmember is not going to be a simple one to make. Winch plate sits ~1" in towards the bottom half of the frame rails.

Worked on clearance at the firewall over the last few evenings, tested at full bump and full lock and wasn't rubbing anywhere with the 3" BL, shouldn't be too bad to clearance for the 1", started off by pounding the hump out of the floorboards, and massaging the shape of the pinch weld to make it more friendly to the shape of the tire.
Still gonna have to do a tiny bit of trimming on the fender and flare at the bottom corner, but I should be able to clear at full bump and full lock with zero rubbing relatively easily.

The Toytec 1" BL came in today, and I was so stoked that I couldn't wait till the weekend, I started the install, it's all still loose, but I got the blocks dropped in and body lowered onto them, as well as swapping out the steering extension, looks very nice and hunkered down instead of looking top heavy. Also so glad that hideous frame gap is gone!

Sinched down the bolts and steering, looking real good. sat in the seat for the first time and it's a huge difference, first of all, the shifter isn't clear down by the floor anymore, so it feels better, and also has more clearance everywhere, the mudflaps and hitch don't look super out of place anymore, the airbox and radiator hose fitment should be really good now, as well as the engine not looking like it's 2 feet down into the engine bay when you pop the hood. And the tire clearance is looking very good, should be able to fully stuff the fronts and get solid travel out of the rear.

Started re-assembly of the engine tonight, spent a solid 5 hours on it, got the head on, cams timed, timing chain locked down, lower intake on, fuel rail on, injectors plugged in and thermostat swapped out.
Made the call to replace the water pump since it appeared to be the original one still on the motor and it was right there. Also found that the motor had been apart at some point and someone had the timing set on the cams off by a tooth, so maybe she'll run a little better now that we've got that fixed up.
Going to pick up a couple parts from the powdercoater tomorrow.

Good choice with the 1" BL. I've been quite happy with mine.
