The argument is not flawed if inconsistency's still exist... Just saying. You just said yourself, "but even aftermarket bumpers like the ARB, shrockworks, ODL, ect can cause damage that other wise might not have occurred."

Think about it? This crash never would have been equal even stock. The Tahoe is a tough built vehicle not a fragile luxury car. There is also the physics involved due to the differences in weight.

You might as well compare an F250 vs a Mercedes sedan. No need to act surprised the bigger truck won.

oh no i understand your point 110%, but if someone only has $400 then they only have $400 and $400 is not $800... and if you are like me, who bought their runner with one already installed, then it cost you $0 and $0 is still not $800 so ill keep mine untill i can afford an ARB(which just so happens to be the bumper im gonna get).

I know this is about an accident. However, I would much rather hit a deer with your free brush guard than with a stock bumper. No doubt about it.

But as mentioned, obviously the tahoe has some other advantages.

So now you must go back out and find a Mercedes with a brush guard and one without and force them to reenact so we can know more.

Mercedes are not cheeply build cars, they are tanks, they are very heavy cars for their size, i know ive owned a few, and worked on a few hundred of them... and the Tahoes front end is designed to crumple(crumple zones)... in order for a vehicle to be approved to use my any law enforcement agency it must pass a more stringent safety test than what the NTSB puts out, not only for the safty of the officer, but for other vehicles(in case of instances just like this). the weight of the Tahoe is roughly 4800lbs, and the Mercedes is about 3800, so yeah their is a 1000lb weight difference, but again its a car vs truck. both vehicles were traveling at roughly the same speed, the weight difference is reflected in the fact that the Mercedes is the vehicle that "spun around" after the impact. have any of you guys taken physics? this isnt rocket science people

I know Washington is close to Canada but...

I see them as damage multipliers due to the side wings that cover the headlight area. I have seen slight bumps into small trees, that the bumper would have pushed out of the way, push the bar back into the fender causing damage.

I was joking around. It was brought up that the two vehicles were different to no conclusive findings can be made.

Dude no offense but I feel like you are the one "light on the physics" - for one thing I think you are DRAMATICALLY underestimating the impact force difference between a 3800 lb vehicle and a 4800 lb vehicle.

The Tahoe's extra 1000 lbs traveling at 35 miles / hr is the "Damage multiplier" here.

I haven't taken physics in years but I am sure someone else can chime in.

ok but still for each action there is an equal and opposite reaction...

the crumple zone on the front of the Tahoe should have taken more of a hit than the side of a car, especially in one of its key structural zones. yes the Tahoe has/had more kinetic energy than the Mercedes, but it still should have sustained higher/more significant damage than it did in relation to what the Mercedes sustained you can not deny that the push bar/guard kept more damage from happening to the Tahoe.

if i take two plastic cups(say, "red solo cup" type) and fill one with water and the other half full then smash them into each other with force, they will both crush and break. only the one full of liquid will a greater force on the other with its greater mass... they will both be crushed.
 
... has to do with the load path. The load on the SUV was transferred into the frame (I assume this is a GMT800 chassis). Really not that hard to understand why the car is trashed and the SUV wasnt 'damaged' that much. Frame is probably 'diamoned' though. I drove my truck away after a 50mph head/corner collision, frame was bent though.


PS: I may be a rocket scientist, MSAAE (lots of complex math with funny shapes), but also completely incorrect.
 
Im sure that the push bar that is on the police car kept the car out of the radiator and grill more than without. I'm also sure that the Tahoe has a bent frame. I don't care if you have a push bar, brush guard, or aftermarket bumper, that impact is going to bend the frame (or should I say crumple zone). Newer vehicles have crumple zones to absorb the energy produced by a collision.

I will add the tha ARB (as far as I know) is the only aftermarket bumper that has additional crumple zones built into the mounts. Factory bumpers/mounts also absorb some of the impact. When we install other offroad bumpers, we are increasing the odds that in a front impact that we will damage the frame more due to a more solid bumper.
 
I personally think they look ok..... but they are just "Brush Gaurds" they are only supposed to protect paint.

Put the money towards a real bumper if you can, they are bloody expensive though.

I have to admit they will do nothing but more damage in an accident. That troopers gaurd was made to be strong and push cars, its not a brush gaurd... it was purpose built... and it still cant compete with on of our bumpers.
 
Also, they ruin approach angles offroad.

:confused: Well, the Tahoe is body-on-ladder-frame (like our 4runners) and the Mercedes is a unibody, which is designed to absorb impact by crumpling.

Also I had thought that it was impossible to have "crumple zones" on a body-on-frame vehicle because in order for 'crumple zones' to work, the body and the frame have to "crumple" at the same rate? Obviously the sheetmetal on a body-on-frame vehicle is going to crumple up a lot faster than the solid frame.
