Damn this antenna needs to go!

I was in Baltimore this weekend and had to park in one of the many parking garages there. Every garage that I entered, the antenna kept dragging against the ceiling and rocking back and forth-so much so that I thought it was going to widen the hole in which it sits! This antenna needs to go!

Plug it or get yourself one of those stubby antennas.

I use the radio on occasion, so the stubby antenna was the way to go. Makes it look a lot better too!
 
Everyone agrees it pretty much sucks. Fortunately, our radio stations here in Baltimore pretty much suck so the fact that my aftermarket shorty antenna's reception pretty much sucks makes it even-steven :)

True to the decrease in radio reception. I've got the iPod hooked up and Pandora streaming via Bluetooth so the radio is hardly touched, but it is there when needed. I might go and resubscribe for the Sat radio for $20 for 4 or 5 month deal but that's for another time.
 
I got tired of having that antenna first catch and then whip back upon entering my garage each time so I simply pulled that little ball off the top of the original, cut it back about 4 inches, slightly filed the tip and reglued the ball with a drop of marine glue. I did not notice any degredation in reception. At first I did the same with a cheap $10 mast from autozone but did not like how it would remain bent at about 50 degrees when travelling at 70 mph so decided to use the original which is much more rigid.

Antman and I live around the corner from each other, and he warned me about this just a few hours after I ordered my Mangowalk antenna. Sure enough, I got it and reception was severely hampered.

I may try the Pep Boys antenna that others were raving about before I throw in the towel and either (a) deal with the staticy noise on the stations I listen to, or (b) put the OEM antenna back on.

I don't feel the same way. I feel like it's my warning if I'm entering an area that is too low for my truck. I rather have my antenna hit the signs and ceiling than my truck!

But that's only cuz the antenna doesn't bother me much.

good point. I am always a little afraid that i'm going to hit inside a parking garage, but i believe 6 foot is all i need to get through..of course 6 feet + is preferred!

I've got the mangowalk antenna on mine with the adapter from autozone/amazon.

It probably is the same quality wise(compared to the craven), but if your looking for the stubby antennas to be a 1-1 replacement reception wise, then you will be disappointed. Others who live in hilly/mountainous areas can probably say the same as well. But I've noticed that if you are in or around the city where the towers are, then you will be fine. If you are in NYC or near the CT border along I-95, you will be able to get the NYC stations.

Its hit or miss here in NY, some local stations are fine but other NYC stations that are far from my location out on the Island is somewhat spotty. I HATE FM/AM radio anyway and only listen to XM w/everything Sirius and Bluetooth streaming from my I-phone. I dont even listen to CDs anymore either. To be honest I havent listen to FM/AM or CD music since 2006. The craven looks real nice though, better then the Lightning rod that came with the truck.
 
I also have the Cravenspeed stubby here in the Portland Oregon area. It works fine in the metro area. I have noticed some dropouts when under overpasses but it seems to work in a tunnel. :confused:

The range, for the stations I listen to, seems to be about 80 miles vs. the 100+ miles on the stock antenna.

The Cravenspeed stubby is also dead simple to install. Unscrew stock antenna, screw in stubby.

Can you share any information as to where you were able to obtain your "Custom laydown mount" for your Cobra 75 CB. Thank you in advance.
 
If / when I get a 5th Gen that thing is turning into a stubby the day it gets home. Perhaps folks should start mailing their original antenna to Toyota corporate with suggestions on where they can stick it to see if they get the message.

Although between the horn and the antenna, I'm glad they fixed the harder of the two to replace..
