This is great to see. Just picked up a 1998 black with a similar sort of story. Previous owner "loved" the truck, but focused more on quick fixes (added keyless entry, rather than rekey, tinted window but rear window doesn't work), than maintenance!

Yeah, it's sad. Some people man..."afraid of the dealer" or of mechanics. I'd like to think my PO just got caught up with his family stuff...but...a receipt or SOMETHING would have been nice in the ELEVEN years he had it. Just lucky he didn't rack up the miles and it was never in the rust belt.

Oddly my PO got his oil changed at the dealership. (because it was close).

But he neglected some basic stuff (inner CVs are ripped and not recently).

Dealer is very close for me, I'll probably do that as well because while I would never authorize anything exorbitantly priced, their complimentary inspections and all are nice just to see if I miss anything. Plus gets the record started for this truck in the system. And relative to the time it takes for me do an oil change it's easier to have someone do it.

I might do the next one so I can do a Blackstone test.

Great thread man! I'm gonna use this as a guide when I buy mine. I'm checking out a 5-speed 3rd gen this afternoon with about 154k for a price I can't really pass up. Aside from the general things to look for when buying one, can you think of anything 5-speed specific to look for aside from the clutch? Thanks!

Hmm...I would say a lot of the appeal of the manual is that you DO NOT have to worry about as many things.

Strawberry milkshake - not a thing.
Transmission overheating - not a thing.
Draining the fluid - remove bolts, drain and refill, no filter, no flush, etc.
No weird shifting or revving issues in P, D, R, or N.

If it feels notchy between 1st and 2nd, a lot of times, a fluid change can fix that. Also listen for clutch bushing squeal when you use the clutch. Very common. Not a major concern, but something to note.

Ask if the transmission fluid has ever been changed...probably not. Definitely recommend Redline MT-90. Night and day difference in my truck.

4Runner doing 4Runner things. Gf and I camped in back to get an early start for backpacking trip in the Shanendoah this weekend.

Need to do seat bolt mod and build a sleeping platform. Was comfortable but definitely cramped for me (6' 1). Perfect for her.

Super happy with my gas mileage though. Little over half a tank remaining with 160mi since last fill. Should hopefully get around or above 300. Was getting barely 100 per TANK before.

I think even with the maintenance done, it was the Air Fuel sensor that was causing it. The carbon deposits have gone away and she runs clean and smooth.

If I was to do it again I'd do the sensor first and then the tune up. It all was worth it though! More good times ahead.

Sweet. I'm glad the sensor worked for you. I've got through and replaced tons of stuff trying to get more than 100 on half a tank, with no success. I gave up about a year ago.

If it hadn't worked, I'm not sure what else I would have done!

Is yours dependent on the type of driving at all or pretty much just sucky regardless?

I don't commute with her so I'm sure my mileage would be a lot worse just city driving. I need to get through a few more tanks tracking it to be fully satisfied. Will also see once I get emissions done...as of now she's "garaged" in Blacksburg...but I'd rather have it all in order and not need to use that loophole for longer than needed.

Love getting out here. Can't wait to check out some of the 4x4 trails.

Highway is considerably better. I can get about 18. 13 city. However mine is an automatic so as long as it runs well I'm content.

So it begins...24 hour detail on her...up till 2am last night. Back at it again this morning.

Can't do much about the hood without wet sanding or a rotary polisher but just cutting through the oxidation is a huge improvement.
