i had this same issue and i took my 91 runner down to the local "sub woofer" shop and they specalize in electrical nonsense, anyways. take out the stereo and make sure that the orange wire IS NOT CONNECTED! i put my own radio in and accidentally connected the orange wire and once i turned on my vehicle zap, no dash lights. believe it or not my acutaly lights were not fragged what i had to do was purchase a new dashlight dimming switch and that fixed EVERYTHING. ebay it i picked mine up for under $20 but make sure you have the orange wire disconnected and taken care of.
