Are you guys interested in a flat rack or basket? There will likely be both featured in this Group Buy, just gauging interest on which is going to have more traction.

It's good to have both flat and basket option. Is there a sunroof insert in case we want to load the front as well? Having said that, are there going to be front legs with padded or 3m tape footing to support the front weight?
 
I'd lean towards the flat rack than a basket. Keeping it lower profile. I'd also be interested in seeing how close to the roof it is.
 
I would be more interested in a basket, but if the design for flat is cool I could be flexible.
 
I like the baskets. I still need to see a finished product the mock up looks as though it is multiple pieces put together. If it is continuous tubing like the WMW or Gobi that would be great.

There will be front legs, the only reason they aren't included in the drawing is because the roof curves there and we'll be waiting to see how long to make those extra legs when it's bolted into the factory rails

Basket is preferred, but may have to go with flat so I can still park in the garage...:D Any measurements on the actual height of the basket?
 
I'd like to have a basket that's like everyone is saying low profile. A removable section that can come on and off where the sun roof is would also be cool. I see that you have have modeled them in CAD - Need an engineer to run load analysis?
 
That looks oddly familiar.

Since I designed this rack specifically for a 48" tent, you may want to change my crossbar spacing. Having them staggered how I designed it (so it lines up with my tent's frame) makes no sense for 99% of the market.

Im interested in a Flat rack if it can Mount a Rooftop Tent and or Snowboard racks LOL. I currently just strap down my snowboards inside the basket, but i wanted to have a rooftop tent too
 
I am now on the fence about offering these. I accidentally ran across the pending lawsuit between GOBI and WMW and I am glad I did.

So, it appears that GOBI has a patent on how roof baskets attach to vehicles. It is the broadest, most ridiculous patent I have ever looked into. Basically, if you make a basket that attaches to the vehicle using the vehicle's exiting roof rack or mount points, it infringes on their patent. That is like saying that if you make a back pack, and it is worn over the shoulders and someone patents their backpack to do the same thing, then you are in the wrong...

I understand there are tons of differences between the two racks, but in the end how they attach to the trucks are very similar which would have been the same way I would have attached because it makes perfect sense to do so. But it appears GOBI patented the idea.

If anyone has some better suggestions on attachment points, let me know. Until then I will try to come up with something but it will be most likely dead in the water at this point. Not going to risk my company over one product.

The thing that bothered me about the Gobi vs WMW lawsuit is that Gobi never bothered going after BajaRack that also attaches to factory points. I believe Gobi's bigger problem was the similarity between Gobi and WMW's racks. Both are full length basket racks of similar style. BajaRack on the other hand is styled differently, same as a flat rack would be. I understand wanting to stay out of it. It is too bad Gobi has basically destroyed any sort of competition in the market.

Glad you found that out now and not after a cease and desist letter. It's a really crappy situation.

I guess you could always contact Gobi first and see what they say.
 
Yeah, it is a tough situation.

I would love to make them. They are very practical. I want one for my 4Runner too, but I won't buy one from GOBI at the prices they charge.

I am unsure what would be accomplished by contacting GOBI. They would most likely tell me to go pound sand.
