Dealer called wondering if I wanted to sell my 4R

Today, out of the blue the dealer I get my service performed at called and said they had someone wanting a 4Runner like mine (a used Trail Edition I presume), and would I be willing to trade? They said they would like to see what they could work out to get me in a newer one. I didn't ask what they were willing to do as far as a new one. I'm two years into paying on this one, with just three to go and I don't want to start over (much less take off and transfer what mods I have already done), so I politely declined. I guess they can look in a database of customers, and they found me. Anyone else have this happen. It's kinda cool, makes me feel like the popular kid in school!

That's the same reason I sold mine. All a marketing ploy though, the 2011 I traded in is still sitting on their lot. Had it priced at 37.5, looked today and it's at 32.9. Looks like they aren't going to make much off of me

Not saying you are not still popular but it's very common. However they are more interested in selling you something new instead of buying yours.

Hasn't happened to me but someone I work with has a 2012 Barcelona Red SR5 and got called about a month ago for the same reason.

She told me they made her a really good offer but wasn't ready to trade.

They're just trying to drum up new sales. I think after 18 or 24 months, they start sending those things out (I don't give them a real phone #). I got them for my 2007 Taco, starting in 2009.

Thanks for bursting my bubble everyone Just kidding, I know their ploy is more to get me in the door and buy a new one, but I thought it was interesting that they added in they had someone interested in a 4Runner like mine. If that is actually true or not,...who knows?

If you get a call from someone in the sales department then it's about drumming up sales.

If you get a call from someone in the service department then someone really wants your car for their personal use.

The service guys see cars come and go all day and they know a nice one when they see it come in for service.

I had this happen to a friend of mine who has a red 01 Taco 4dr 74K original miles with no mods. And no, he didn't sell either.

Everyone hit the nail on the head. Sales are slow right now and the green peas are resorting to the old school methods. I run the internet sales department at a dealership (non Toyota). I get a generated report emailed to me for our service customers that are scheduled that day. If they bought it from us I get the estimated value, monthly payment, estimated payoff and when the warranty expires. If they didn't buy a car from us it is another sheet called "service not sold". We do our best to convert the visiting customers into a new customer.

To be honest a clean TE is in high demand. You could call his bluff... get invoice on the '14 and ask for over trade value for yours That is what I when my SR5 hit 40k mi lol "I don't need a new 4Runner, make it worth my time".

Hell, I got this in 2011 on my '00 Explorer about three months after my wife took it to the dealer for an oil change. It's pure hooey.

Never believe a word that comes out of a dealership salesmen's mouth.

A few times I have taken my 07' to the Dealer for service and shortly after leaving I get a call from a Sales Manager. He proceeds to tell me that he saw my car in for service and the "mechanic told him its in excellent shape and that it would be perfect for the customer he has looking for that EXACT model".

Shortly after that he tells me he has plenty of new ones he would be glad to show me.

Im sure he does.

I have had similar things happen to me. I am now a salesman and I won't lie to you. Now if you will believe me or not is up to you, seeing as I told you I am a salesman! But hey seeing as just saying something like that can make up a good part of their sales, why wouldn't someone with no morals tell you a nice fib? lol
