Dealer Service Depts VS Others

Any opinions of using Toyota Service Depta vs somewhere else.

I.E.

Oil Changes,..

Toyota Service Dept vs Jiffy Lube, etc

(I just called the Toyota dealership in downtown Chicago for an oil change, closed one I can get to, when I get off work. They told me, there is an wait, and it should take 1 1/2. Heck, I can go to a Jiffy Lube and have it dont in 30 minutes)



The dealership tends to be more expensive, but is it worth it? is their quality worth the cost?

I would stay away from Jiffy or any other national brand shops. They usually do a half-ass job. If you can find a good reputation mom-&-pop garage, then it should be OK.

Call a different dealer. Most Toyo dealers have an express lube service (Under 30 minutes or its free). Mine runs about $35. Well worth the cost.............

My Toyota dealer does a 30 minute or less oil change for 20 bucks.

Avoid those Jiffy Lube places like the plague. Sure, they're quicker but more likely to screw up you $30+ 4runner by putting the wrong filter, underfill/overfill/forget oil, or forget to put the plug back. No way in hell I would take that chance. You're better off at the stealer or reputable shop should you decide not to do it yourself.

I prefer DIY. I can do it myself and take as much time and care as I want. I am very meticulous about changing my own oil. I clean the filter mount ridiculousy, check for any cracks in the hoses, clean the threads of the plug, and inspect the whole engine bay in general while I have the hood up. I sleep better too knowing that it was an oil change done right with the right amount of oil, type of oil, filter, and that the plug was indeed put back and checked for leaks. I doubt anyone else would put in that type of effort and care into my vehicle. It's so easy that there is no reason not to perform it yourself (other than having the stealer stamp the maintenance book for warranty purposes).

Our dealership has AWESOME mechanics and does a LOF and minor inspection for $42.13 CDN after 14% tax and enviro levies......IMO not worth risking it to Wal Mart or some cheapy place to save 4 bucks.

I have mine done at the dealer, $25 which is actually cheaper than Valvoline. Im usually in and out in less that an hour (without express lube). Plus you are getting a Toyota filter and hopefully the dealer knows what they are doing. My bro had his oil changed at a Pontiac dealer then the next time he went to JiffyLube. JL said his oil cap was gone, I guess not all dealers are equal.

He drove an entire oil change interval with no oil cap? Or, for that matter, without realizing it was missing

If so, he's damn lucky, because I've seen people grenade motors from just driving an hour or 2 with no oil cap....
