Dealer thinks my climate control module is whack.

Hey all. Have an 06 limited runner with the digital/dual/auto climate. Its finally not a million degrees in Ohio, so this problem has become apparent recently.

For reference... "low" is what the climate display says on its lowest temperature setting, with or without AC on. 65 is the lowest numbered temperature setting on the unit.


Here is what is going on:

If the climate is set to dual or single, on low, with the AC on, it blows ice cold.

If the climate is set to dual or single, on low and the AC is off, it blows warm.

If the climate is set to dual, one side is on low with the AC on and the other side is set to any other temperature other than low - that side blows hot.

If the climate is set to single, on 65, with or without AC on, it blows super hot.

Any temperature from 65 on up blows face-meltingly hot. I effectively have two extremes - ice cold or lava wind.

I stopped at a Toyota dealer near my office to riddle them my situation and the service advisor, after physically sitting in my rig and experiencing the situation, surmised I need to replace the climate control module to the tune of lots of money.

Has anyone else experienced this/fixed it? Thanks for your input.

Whenever I changed the temp up from LO it would get HOT! Temp didn't matter.

Don't know if it's the same part but I had to replace the blower motor controller. $150. Whatever you do, don't do aftermarket. I tried 2 different Beck/Arney and they did not work. Only Toyota OEM.

Well $150 is a lot less than the $1k+ the whole damn unit would be. How easy was the removal/install?

Easy. Under the passenger dash.

If your blower motor is fine, you don't need to replace it.

I wouldn’t trust that service advisor. I had the control module on the dash short out, had visible scorch marks on the circuit board. I replaced it with one from a SRS (non-dual control) for $50 from a used parts place. Works fine now.

In my experience most "Service Advisors" aren't auto technicians/mechanics and aren't qualified to do diagnostics, their job is to schedule your vehicle with the technician/mechanic so they can do their job and hopefully the technician is qualified which unfortunately I've seen some that aren't as qualified as they should be!!
