Seemed to be my experience, as well. Had to find the one I wanted on my own, and fight the dealer tooth and nail to make the damn sale, at a price that was making them plenty of money on a vehicle they had sitting on the lot for over 6 months. :wtf:

When I went looking for my 4R, I visited a few local dealers. All I was looking for was a Mag Grey SR5, sunroof, remote start, no leather. The dealer I ended up settling with tried their damnedest to put me in a 2010 Silver Limited Demo model with 20K miles. Or a silver or black SR5. Their final push was "if you can look past the color, and take the silver LTD, we will install the remote start for free." I'm sorry, but if I will be living with a car for 10 years, you're selling me the one i walked in asking for. All this because they didn't want to pull the Grey SR5 from another dealers inventory. Just my little rant...

One dealership I went to wouldn't budge on there $46k sticker price. When I told them that wouldn't work he tried to convince me on the merits of leasing because "everyone who works at Green's Toyota leases their autos. No one buys anymore." Told him thanks but no thanks. Found a dealership an hour away that bent over backwards for my business.

Isn't it illegal for any dealer to take a deposit on a vehicle without a vin#? Or without knowing the vin#?

gotta be ready to walk when buying from a dealer

most have policies / scripts that the sales guys are forced into whether they make sense or not and the reason is that it is a system that works for the dealership in the long run

Ya man for sure I wouldn't get the trail without KDSS if thats the case you might as well just get the SR5 and save a few bucks and trow the stuff you want in after market.

No idea of your location, but I was helping a friend of mine find a Magnetic Grey Trail (Kdss, etc) this last week. There is an 11 at Jones Toyota in Bel Air, Md. They want a high price, so it may take some negotiations. There is a 12 in Ohio with the same specs. There was one in WV this week, but that's the one he ended up grabbing.

Good luck and happy hunting. You can find them!

I have similar concerns about the Limited I'm supposed to purchase next week. The dealership experience has been the worst I've experienced, but I'm hanging in there.

Once we finally settled on pricing, the dealer told me he'd find one for me and get back in touch. I tried calling a couple days in a row to get an update, and I was told that the GM I originally spoke to would call me back. Took him 3 days to call me back. He told me he'd found one in freight that was allotted to another dealer, but he had something they needed so he could probably get it.

He left me a message the next day telling me that he got it and it should be in next week. They haven't asked me to put a deposit down or anything, which I find strange.

I just get the sneaking suspicion that when it comes in, some kind of curve ball is going to be thrown my way. Just seems like they're trying to give me as few details as possible to keep an edge. I feel like once we agreed to a price and I informed them I didn't need financing, they lost all interest and sense of urgency.

Man, I feel really lucky after reading some of these posts.

My dealer found the 4runner with the specs I wanted, promptly started negotiations with the other dealer and had it delivered within 3 days. He even had a backup plan vehicle in another state (just in case). When it arrived, it was exactly as he described. Actually, he had already given us the VIN# to begin getting our insurance lined up. If it wasn't as he described, then we would get our $500 deposit refunded.

Easy peasy!

I'll one up you. I walked into the dealer, told them what I was looking for, exact specs (this was back in fall of 09' when none were around yet). He said he would call me as soon as they arrived (figured I would have to wait for one like I wanted). Received a call, he said 'my' 4Runner was in. It was the only one they received, all the specs/color I wanted. I test drove it, gave him a $100 deposit, went back the next day for the final paperwork and payment.

Grizz - There are so many red flags in your post ...

I sure hope that works out fer ya.

I'm confident it will; if they waiver on the price, or hit me with any surprises, I'll walk. We've already agreed upon pricing for the 4Runner and my trade. The good thing is, there are 3 dealers within a 30 mile radius, and I've made perfectly clear that I know that. This particular dealer offers the lifetime powertrain warranty, however, and that's attractive to me.

When he finally did call me back, he was very apologetic and reassured me somewhat. It was a long holiday weekend, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he was slammed (which is what he told me).
