Dealership wants my V8, or . . .

So every couple of months I've been getting a call from my local Toyota dealership asking if I want to sell my V8 4Runner. They always say that there is someone looking for a V8 4Runner and they are willing to pay retail blue book for it!

I always tell them the same thing, "That's great! But what will I pull my travel trailer with then?"

Is anybody else getting inquiries like that? Or do you think they are just scamming me and trying to sell me something? (can't imagine a salesperson doing that . . .) :nono:

Just FYI... almost every time I have compared KBB values (4x4 4Runner and Tacoma) to real world numbers they seem low.

KBB does not take into account the "Toyota Tax"... I just KBBed my own truck and I can easily get 4-5k more than what they say there.

So, for you to go excellent full retail... they still have about 4-5k of profit into it.

Selling to dealer for their price, you would be the sucker. Why do you think they are even calling you, to do you a favor?

I've had the same thing for a couple of my Toyota's I've owned. We're actually turning my wives Rav 4 lease in early because they're low on used car inventory. Of course, always read the fine print when it comes to a dealership.

What do you mean - that dealerships can't be trusted?! :biggrin2:

Where dealerships have the advantage is that they can finance older vehicles that banks won’t. I sold my F150 to a dealership for what I paid for it two years and 50k miles earlier. =) I grabbed the deal because it was painless. Granted they tried to bargain. I said full price or nothing. They had someone coming to look at it the same day they got it.

Oh and they were dying to get their hands on my friend’s 10 year old 3rd gen when she picked me up. Manual with about 56k miles on it.......she wouldn’t bite.

This is purely a sales scheme. They want you to come in and trade up for a new (or new to you) car to make a profit. Many places do this, some do not.

Dealership called me about 2 months ago probably, saying my 4runner had got brought up during a meeting of theirs and they would make me a really strong offer on it, that their used car inventory was low, also great new 2017’s to lease, yadda yadda....I didn’t call them back.

you can't really put a price on the greatest car known to man. Its just not right.

All of this is to try and get you into a new Toyota. I get the flyer with every oil/tire rotation at the dealership. And occasionally they'll call me and I have a polite conversation with the sales guy and tell him that I haven't had a car payment in 8 years and my 4Runner is running great, and I know it's entire history because I bought it new and I won't be ready to buy another new 4Runner until at least 2025. He said he's been driving his 3rd gen since 2000 and understands my love for my ride:)

Probably depends. We used to get flyers in the mail where this was obviously crap, but if a sales associate is actively calling you it is probably legitimate.

We paid more than KBB retail ~2 years ago for our low mile 07 v8 4wd. Not a ton more, but it was the difference between us getting it and someone else.

Toyota needs to do another V8 4R!

I usually tell them, "I'll think about it when Toyota makes another 4Runner with a V8 to pull my trailer with" and that shuts them down right away!

But they specifically say they have someone looking for a V8. This dealership's service department (Right Toyota, Scottsdale AZ) has been absolutely great over the years, but I can't speak to the integrity of their sales . . .

When I worked at a Lexus dealership, they had a call center that made those same calls all day to everyone that had been to the dealership. Regardless of type of car the customer had... they wanted it and would pay top dollar!

You sure it's a personal call from one of their people? I get emails like this all the time but I ignore them. They don't care about your truck unless you're there to trade in/buy a car. They're better off using their energy on potential customers on-site IMO.

If I was a salesperson, I wouldn't be harassing someone if they weren't interested in trading in/selling their vehicle, even if it was a v8. Who the hell am I to dictate whether they should sell/trade in their vehicle upon command so I can make few extra bucks? Especially if they did not ask me to contact them in case future customers inquired about knowing anyone who had a vehicle they were looking for.

Tell them to stop harassing you or sweeten the deal enough for you to take time out of your busy schedule to begin the process of exchanging vehicles. I mean REALLY sweeten it cotton candy style. I'd never let anyone tell me what to do with my own property

What a novel idea! Wow - I have authority over my own property - who knew!? I was all ready and set to sell it to them, and then I would have been in the predicament of figuring out what to tow my trailer with . . . good thing I got that advice! Whew - dodged another bullet in life! :50cal:

Based on this post it was sarcasm in my opinion but I'll let it slide. Apologies for trying to be helpful.

No, I'm the one making jerky response!

Oh okay - It just struck me as funny and I responded thusly - now I'm gonna have to beg forgiveness for my "Jerk Store" response! Anyway, sorry - the affect often gets lost in the written word . . .

Yeah, they don't want your used car. What they want is to sell you a new one.

GF works at a car dealer and they send these things out all the time. Car dealers want to push their new stuff, and sell their used inventory as quickly as possible, and 90% of their tradeins go straight to auction.

I'm actually trying to visualize how this transaction would take place if these postcards were true:

"Hi, welcome to our car dealer -- how can I help you? Are you interested in one of our new cars?"

"No, actually I'm looking for a dark blue 2007 4Runner with this specific set of options...."

"Ah, no, we don't have one of those on the lot right now, but let me go through my customer list and call those people that own one and see if they'd sell it to you. We could probably offer them some sort of discount on a new car for their trouble."

Yep, pure altruism.
