Yeah, they don't want your used car. What they want is to sell you a new one.

GF works at a car dealer and they send these things out all the time. Car dealers want to push their new stuff, and sell their used inventory as quickly as possible, and 90% of their tradeins go straight to auction.

I'm actually trying to visualize how this transaction would take place if these postcards were true:

"Hi, welcome to our car dealer -- how can I help you? Are you interested in one of our new cars?"

"No, actually I'm looking for a dark blue 2007 4Runner with this specific set of options...."

"Ah, no, we don't have one of those on the lot right now, but let me go through my customer list and call those people that own one and see if they'd sell it to you. We could probably offer them some sort of discount on a new car for their trouble."

Exactly!! That's what I was trying to tell OP. He seemed flattered being contacted by his own dealership every few months here and there when in reality they're doing it everyone who visited the dealership recently.

The only time I think this might have been MARGINALLY believable was after Cash for Clunkers when there was a perceived shortage of used cars.
