Dealing with Idiots from Craigslist

It took me 2 months calling and going thru ads in CL yes most were POS or too much $$$ and there were small time dealers that detailed junk and had the gall to say 1 owner. Any how persistence does pay off I found my 2001 wasn't perfect but it was solid truck to start with and so far been able to work on all the fixes & upgrades myself w/ exception of the trans flush & filter replacement.

Craiglist Fail

I have been dealing with craigslist winners myself. I need a commuter car, and have been looking at camry's. Can't believe the crap people put of there. Meaning, crappy pics not much detail or even no pictures. I also noticed a trend that alot of small dealers are posting by owner with pics in front of homes.

You can always spot high mile vehicle when no mileage is listed, like not providing it will hide it.

I listed my 99 Limited 4Runner and placed a very detailed post of the vehicle and everything done to it. Plenty of pics and details.

Its such a crap shoot but there are good deals out there.

I meant people who throw out a lowball offer, and expect a huge discount for paying cash, as if there is some other way to pay.

I understand your point but, working in finance, it's common for people (even with $5-$10k cars) to drag the seller to their bank to conduct the sale.

I bought them from Discount Tires. 17 x 9; 6-139.70 - 12 GYTXX I believe they are called Punch from Level 8 cost $107 each but I had $160 rebate for opening a charge account & they had a Memorial Day special. The total was $428 then with the discount of $160 = 268. I sold my old 16 x 7 OEM alloys for $200 which had 1 year old tires so net was $68.00 before taxes. Oh I used Craig's List sold it to another 4 runner owner that had a 95. I asked for $250 he offered $200 cash so we closed the deal. I included the invoice so you can see the details. The tires are BF Goodrich LT 275/70/17R. One last thing I didnt need a spacer so that was one less expense.

I ran into someone like that a middle eastern guy posted in CL 1997 4 runner 1 owner, I asked about maintenace records, when the timing belt & water pump been replaced he said it was done 30k miles ago so I made arrangements to meet him & test drive the truck. Anyhow got there drove it it seemed ok but heard some odd noises & the engine was way to spotless. So I asked again if he was the original owner & if he had the receipts for the t- belt & water pump that's when things went sideways. He got defensive and fessted up that he was a "reseller" non-brick & mortar business then he said what's the big deal the timing belt cost only $20-30. So I told him yeah if you buy shit and can install it yourself which is at least a 3 hr job. Anyhow I walked away. That ass gives minorities like myself a bad name, probably didn't help that I'm prior service 11B so when I saw him I immediately distrust the f...... K

To Ironman the wheels are 17 x9 6-139.70 got them from discount tires believe they are Level 8 model mark 6 / punch, I thought I had sent a reply specifically to you but it ended up just as part of general reply to the craig's list discussion forgot to hit quote.

My favorite is when asking for a picture of the frame for rust. Their response is usually, "the frame is solid" with no pictures. Or they will take a picture of a tiny portion that doesnt have any rust. I have learned to not even bother checking on some vehicles depending on where they live and when their grammar is not good.

I lived about an hour and a half away from a Toyota dealer that was selling a manual 97 4Runner with front and rear arb bumpers. I fell in love immediately and drove down to check it out and then they told me I couldn't look at it because it had a recalled suspension and they were going to have to take it to the shop to replace it so I gave them my number to call me when It was ready. I would call in every couple days checking in and they'd let me know that it was still being worked on. About 3 weeks later they call me letting me know it's ready to buy so I drive down there only to find that it's still not ready but the salesmen was just trying to get me to buy their other cars. So once again I go home empty handed but a lot more upset. As the weeks continue someone from the dealer would call me once or twice a week trying to convince me that the car is ready but after talking to the manager id find the statements not to be true. Finally after 2 months of waiting I got actual confirmation that the 4Runner is back at the dealer and ready to buy however they wanted to upcharge it another 1000$s because they found out they were worth more. With no luck negotiating I decided to just go for it since it was a great 4Runner and when I was 10 minutes from the dealer I get the call that they just sold it from under me to one of the employees. I still feel sick driving past that dealership

I found a little 92 extra cab 22RE pickup at the local dealership with only like 70k on it for $6k or so back in 07 or 08.

Went and put a deposit on it, secured cash, and it was 'sold to an employee by the owner' before I could make it back, but they 'had great deals on 08 Tacomas!'

I share your pain.

I have 16" version of those wheels in bronze. Nice wheels and truck.

Craigslist mostly sucks. Prob 75 % of the sellers are bullish!t and rest are ok. I've had all sorts of experiences from excellent to make me want to throw someone. Majority of peOpel don't know how to communicate or market to sell things. 50% + of people are mouth breathers, can't expect much these days.

What dealership was that?

I am sure we've all gone through some bad private sellers via Craigslist. I've already experienced a couple so far.

I'll be meeting them this weekend to check out a couple 4Runners... Hopefully it all goes well. :tape2:

Good conditions and breaks

Oh like V4,engine good breaks and good conditions hahahah. Heck English is a second language for me but I still manage.

Yes, definitely do this. They can scan the money quickly to determine if it's even real. A handful of fake $100 bills is not worth any more than a bad check.
(well I guess the $100 bills won't bounce)

I've got all the usual CL stories that everyone else has, but one sticks out when I was looking for my current 4runner. Found one local for a decent price that said it had trouble getting into 4wd and it was probably just the actuator. Guy selling it is a service manager, it's his buddy's car, it's on the dealer's lot (buddy got a new 4runner) and it needs to go so he's willing to deal.

So I checked it out and the flags start adding up pretty quickly. Guy didn't know what's wrong with it, despite us sitting in the back of a toyota dealership's repair bay. He refused my offer to pay $100 on the spot to have a mechanic there diagnose it. Couldn't explain why his friend wouldn't just fix it if it was a cheap fix, instead of selling it for $1000 below going rate.

So I logged into the toyota owner's site, typed in the VIN, registered it as my car, and got the entire service history. Turns out, it had been diagnosed the week before AT THAT DEALERSHIP as needing a new transfer case --- which was a used unit after the first one blew the year before.

I just never understood why this guy would put his professional rep on the line at his place of business in order to help his buddy get an extra couple hundred bucks. It wasn't like he was giving some spin or didn't know what was going on. Dude was the service manager on the repair order then actively lied to a potential buyer about what was wrong with the car. So stupid.

also, first non-classified forum post. yay :)
