Dealing with Idiots from Craigslist

"Is the title in your name? How long have you owned it?" Should be on the list of top questions to ask.

YMMV

This...and is the title in your possession. Had a few conversations end right there. CL can be a great tool if used properly by both sides....unfortunately it isn't always. I guess that's just asking too much for/from some folks.

I've looked at a lot of vehicles on CL within the past few months. In my experience, the discriptions/pictures rarely tell the true tale. For this reason I'd have a hard time driving long distance to look at a car/truck.

Agreed.

I actually had a really pleasant experience when I bought my Runner last month. Girl was really knowledgeable and forthright with any information I asked about.

The only issue I had with the vehicle was the grill was painted. Not like it was sprayed. It looked like caked on house paint. So when I get the cash Ill probably just order a new front grill and plasti-dip it white to match the truck.

Other than that it shifted incredibly well, 4wd worked in every setting, no leaks. Only paid 5,000 for it. I feel like I got a steal.

It's amazing to me people think I care how far they're driving to look at/buy my vehicle for sale. I NEVER ask for a discount because the vehicle I want is 4hrs from where I live. Nor do I ask them to "meet me halfway". The vehicle is 4hrs away- if I want to look at it, I am going to drive 4hrs to do so.
I've heard of people lying about where they live, and asking people to "meet them halfway", when really they live down the street from "halfway". Those people are the ones that ruin it for the honest people.

^ totally agree. I sold an old 3rd gen a few years ago and the guy wanted me to meet him "half-way". He even texted me a picture of cash hahaha :loco:

I told him if he wants it, to come and get it. He claimed to have driven 6 hrs for it. I only lowered the price $200. It sold for the same amount that I paid :-)

The guy that called me was like I have x cash right now and can be there in 15 mins. In my mind I was like... you just told me you were from the SF Bay Area. That's a 2 hour drive... lololol

Think I grew out of C-List at this point.

In 5 years, I went through 25 cars. It was pretty fun!

But now, i just don't have the time and patience for it.

So... I plan on keeping my current fleet for a while. So I don't have to go buy something else.

That being said, I've been on the other side. When I bought my Runner, I was looking at Alberta trucks. Being in the Yukon, I had people laugh at me because I was willing to travel down to pick it up. One guy refused to believe me (shame too because it was a nice red '98 I believe) and I ended up buying one in Calgary (2400km one-way from where I live).

Guy was a little skeptical, he called me to make sure I was legit, I offered a deposit and he declined, but did send him a picture of my plane ticket for the flight down to get it.

I would be a little skeptical too, but its not like he has anything to lose by waiting a day or two. lol

I loathe using craigslist. Last time I sold some winter tires and the tried to play it off like he didn't know that he couldn't drive on them in the summer and made the trip. I lowered the price 20 bucks just to sell them. I'm gonna list my 3rd gen in a few weeks and I have no idea how I'm gonna sell this thing. I hope it goes to someone here that can finish what I started with it. It still needs some work but its alot better then when I got it.

If it's anything of significant value (buying or selling) I screen via a call. If I can't talk to them or they won't call me I just drop it. And of course anything that even hints at a scam and I disregard it entirely. The only kinds of buyers and sellers I want to deal with will have a conversation with me. I have found this method very effective.

I mean really...if you're talking about buying or selling something for even a few thousand dollars or over you need to make sure both parties are as best you can tell legitimate and respectable and a call / conversation goes a long way.

I've even told people not to bother to come look if I feel they're aiming to lowball too much. On the other hand I have very, very often paid full asking price for something and only haggle if I really can give a reason and even then I never forget the game...their right to pass. I have had some guys waste my time when selling but not too bad...that pre-screen call helps me weed out the jokers and even on those Deals where we couldn't make it work they are usually in the ballpark.

I also will respect the first call IF we have talked and agreed to a time to meet soon. I don't do bidding wars. I ask what I want and if that first person has the cash they get it. If they try and lowball and I've got more calls and texts on my phone I'll respectfully decline their offer. If it sits for a few weeks and no calls I'm more negotiable and up front either way before we even meet.

Of course the more expensive the item the better actually in this equation...more respectable and serious buyers. As far as parts and smaller items I have them meet me in a very public place near my home or work and go from there.

These methods have worked well for over 100 sales and purchases.

Same here - I've been on both sides.

Longest I have driven is 8 hours. But I had friends to visit at the location so driving 8hrs was no big deal. I just scheduled to check out 2-3 runners in 1 day.
BUT I never EVER told the seller I was driving that far just for their runner since that would be a negative impact on my side of the negotiation table.

Here's a funny story for yall

On CL you win some, you lose some. I got my 4r on CL for an absolute steal, but have definitely had some losers. I make a lot of money off CL for side work, but I ALWAYS carry a firearm when meeting with people from online and either deliver or meet in public, never at my house.

Long post, but here's one of my favorites:

I was helping a friend look at some trucks one day. We lined up a couple mid-90s f150s to look at. He was helping me do some work, so we were in my "work truck" (another CL steal, a one-owner time capsule 93 F250 with a 460 and every receipt for service, that I bought for a couple grand).
The first one we go look at had some issues. First, the guy asks why I put dual exhaust on my truck (wtf? Cause I wanted it...?) Then we pop the hood to look at the 351 that's supposed to be under the hood. Problem is that it has a 302. Not really a big problem, just not what was advertised. The guy then says it was a 351 and that his grand dad took it out to put in the 302 for better gas mileage (what?) and the 302 is better than a 351.... then I asked about the transmission, guy says it's the stock transmission, just swapped the motors. I crawled underneath and nope. It has a weak auto that was never behind the 351. So this guy is lying about everything. We humor him for a test drive, then leave.

Second truck was advertised as being in excellent condition with decent mileage for a fair, but slightly high price. We drive another hour to look at this one. We pull up to a dead-end road in a very rough neighborhood and there's no truck. I position my truck for a speedy getaway should I need it and we wait, the guy says he ran to put some gas in the truck so we can drive it. While waiting I called my dad (retired DA detective) to let him know where to start looking if we arent heard from again. He laughs and tells me about a Capital Murder case he work next door to the house we are at and a double homicide on this same street as well. I get a warm comfortable feeling.
After 10 minutes it pulls up, but it isn't in excellent shape. It shape is what I would consider to be "mostly physically intact". The windshield is smashed, the hood is dented, there is not a straight panel on the truck and the inside of the bed looks like it hauled boulders for its whole life. Inside we were rewarded with seats that stabbed you with wires, garden divider stakes in place of the door handles, no AC, and a random extension cord coming from inside the dash somewhere, to the back seat. The truck had no exhaust attached and also had no functioning speedometer. The guy said the cable broke, but these trucks use a speed sensor and TPS system. So we drive this truck, just to see how the 300 cube I6 drives. Not well with no VSS, since it didn't shift properly. We ask the guy what his real price is and he loses it. We tell him we'll get back to him and leave.

My buddy makes a super low offer on the first truck and the guy accepts it. Then can't find the title. Then says the DMV has the title and when his check clears he can register it as the DMV. That's not how it works in Texas... then a week later says the title is in his grandfather's name and that it is being mailed to the seller. Then I don't remember what else happened but it was laughable how long the seller kept texting him about buying the truck.

Craigslist is like panning for Gold.

A couple months ago I sold my Civic (I had two at the time) on Craigslist so I could buy a 3rd gen. My ad went into TOO much detail compared to many others. No stone was left unturned in my description, including the reason I wanted to sell.

Some replies:
Q: What's the mileage?
A: 123,000, like it says in the ad.

Q: Why are you selling it and is there anything wrong with it?
A: I'm selling it because I want to buy a 3rd gen 4Runner, and the only thing wrong with it to my knowledge is that it burns a little oil...like it says in the ad.

Q: Is it manual or automatic?
A: Manual. Like it says in the ad.

Q: Is it 2 door or 4 door?
A: It's a coupe. LIKE IT SAYS IN THE AD. Or, you know, you could look at the 15 freaking pictures.

(I was asking 4,250)
Q: Man I want your car but all I have is 2,000
A: Then buy a car that's worth 2,000.

Q: Will you take a trade for (insert whatever POS they wanted to trade here)
A: I won't take trades, like it says in the ad.

I swear, people either can't or don't choose to read. I eventually sold it to a dude who knows how to read a CL ad and also has some big plans for the car, which made me happy. I drove it for 6 years and was glad to see it go to someone with capable hands.

Anyway. I've always said if you've had a bad day or are otherwise feeling bad about yourself, all you need to do is go to Craigslist for 5 minutes and look at some of the things people are trying to sell that they think are worth actual money, along with the grammar and spelling (or lack thereof) of their ads, and you'll feel a whole lot better about yourself.
