debadging and resale value

i got my t4r two...urg... three weeks ago and i absolutely love it, despite of the some buzzing noise on the bumpy road from the sunglass holder rooftop. however, i keep thinking that if t4r is this good, i wonder how better gx470 is! currently i'm considering debadging my t4r for more cleaner and stealthy, if not better, look...at least to me, that is.

question 1. i might trade-in my t4r in one year or so if i cannot live with this rattling noise from the sunglass holder. i admit i'm pretty picky about the noise. will the resale value hit if i go through the debadging process? i mean the complete debadging - SR5 on the side, TOYOTA and 4RUNNER on the rear.

question 2. anyone upgraded from t4r to gx470? comments? anything negative about the upgrade? from what i've read, gx470 is everything that t4r is, and some more, including more quietness and luxurious cabin...

You'd trade it in because of the buzzing noise in the sunglass holder? Wow. Why don't you just get the dealership to fix it? It's what they are there for. Also trading it in that soon, you'll take a big hit financially but hey it's your money.

Debadging won't affect resale. It costs them next to nothing to replace the badges and is probably part of their "reconditioning" of the vehicle to get it ready for sale. Most people won't even notice that the badges are missing.

Those badges will cost to replace, just take them carefully without damaging them and you can add new double sided tape and put them back when you need to.

I also bet if it was traded in to a dealer that they would not catch the missing badges either.

Sounds like you know all the positives of upgrading to the GX, but allow me to point out a few of the "downsides":

The 4Runner is lighter and shorter so its faster and handles slightly better.

From what I've read, the Limited 4Runner interior has basically the same ammenities as the GX except for the Mark Levinson stereo system and wood trim.

For alot of people it comes down to looks and money (duh?), but if you want to save a couple thousand dollars and get *almost* the same car, go with the Limited 4Runner; I would even if I had the money for the GX...

I traded in my 4runner for the GX 2 months ago, not because I didnt like the 4runner but just that I had a little extra cash and wanted to upgrade. If I remember right, the 4runner limited V8 with 4WD is only about 200 pounds lighter and as far as accelaration is concerned, my bet is that most people will not be able to tell the difference, at least I didnt. Handling on both vehicle is about the same without the optional suspension packages, but the KDSS on the GX handles better than the X-REAS on the 4runner. The interior on the GX is simply amazing, the Mark Levinson stereo system, the instrument panel, HVAC control, door control, the front seats and the interior material used were all one step above the 4runner. About the only thing I miss is the power rear window on the 4runner.

After some research, however, the GX is 340 lbs heavier than the Limited 4x4 resulting in 500 lbs less towing capacity and half a second slower 0-60, which to anyone who cares about this kind of thing makes a difference.

Just last month I replaced my debadged 2000 4runner. I got two dealer trade-in quotes and neither noticed the badges. I ended up selling it myself (for $4k more than the highest dealer offer), and not a single private looker noticed.

The 2000 model had TONS of large badges on the tailgate - 4wd, Limited, Toyota, 4Runner. It was so much cleaner without them. I haven't bothered to debadge the new one - they just aren't so big this time around and the crome badges don't look so bad on a silver truck.

Thats the funny thing, aot of people if they saw you on the road would question and have a couple of guesses but no badges to prove it. When selling it they know what their looking at. But on the road it makes you think for a minute about what make or model. My mom for one looks for the badges to tell what kind it is.

But no one should notice but enthusiast. I debadged mine and when i got the tailgate replaced (accident) They didnt notice either, they spent some time looking at pictures to find out where the emblems went and put on the SR5 but not the toyota.

Debadging will probably have some questions from dealership, but I do not think it's going to change resale value. If it does, keep the emblems and attach them before giving back to dealer.

Removing the SR5 badges from the doors will result in one millisecond off your 0-60 time!
