Deckplate Mod vs. K&N Cold Air

I have a lightly oiled K&N cone filter (in need of cleaning ) directly hooked to my MAF with silencers removed and all new breather hoses and haven't had any problems in over 3 years. I've checked my MAF and TB and no greasy buildup. Im 2wd and don't wheel so I don't have to worry about dirt/mud and such. Has a nice "throatier" sound. As far as HP I noticed a slight difference. It works for me.

"short ram intakes" like the one featured above could actually lose HP. The engine bay becomes heat soaked rather quickly, of you don't believe me ask anyone who has ever ran their vehicle at the track, IAT rises and so does ET.

Go back to a stock intake box and tube with a good quality high flowing paper filter.

I can see your point about heat, But doesn't a stock box with a deckplate mod suffer from heat as well?

The stock box has a snorkel to pull cool air from the fenderwell. The deckplate does basically what your open filter does - lets in hot engine heated air reducing power and increasing spark knock.

I actually have no clue what the deck plate mod was until recently. Despite the high post count I am relatively new around here and very new to 4Runners. I come from a long line of domestic trucks.

The k&N CAI comes with a heat shield and is designed to draw from the original outside breather hole.

Well gents, you and the video from page 1 in this thread have inspired me to head to the garage and put my stock air box back in! I have always run K&N filters on my cars/trucks and I am truly surprised by the lack of results I learned today. Once again the old saying of "you learn something new every day" is accomplished again for me here on T4R!
