Delivery Checklist

OK...so I spoke with my dealer yesterday & he says that my truck may be in as early as Wednesday. Before I take delivery though, I want to make sure I do a thorough inspection on the truck. So what are the specific things I shoud look for?

One thing I know I want to check on is the paint. Since I am getting the truck in Natural White, and there have been multiple threads regarding the possible absence of a clear coat on white painted vehicles, I am going to look at the thing from every possible angle to make sure the paint is perfect.

So what other things should I make sure I go over? What are some things you wish you had gone over with your dealer before you took final delivery?

Make sure you get everything that is promised to you on that same day. If you are suppose to get headphones, make sure they are in the truck. Otherwise you'll have to keep coming back and this adds to the frustration when you should be enjoying the truck.

Ask them to switch to the Michelin if you get a truck with the crappier tires (Not sure what tires come on the 18")

Take it for a test drive before you sign paper work. Radio off to see if you hear any wierd noises.

Make sure the steering wheel is centered when the tires are going straight (One member got his truck and his steering wheel was slightly turned even though his tires where pointed straight)

Depending on how anal you want to be, you may also want to closely inspect the leather surfaces. The vinyl is probably pretty durable but I noticed what looked like the beginnings of a tear about 2 inches long on the back middle seat when I picked mine up. It wasn't really deep but I wasn't too happy when I saw it. I told the dealer but there wasn't much he could do about it... the car was fine other than that and I didn't think it was worth it to wait another 3 months for another try.
You may notice a couple of things wrong with it when you see it but you'll have to decide if it is worth it to reject it. My seat problem probably won't actually ever rip so I'm not that concerned.

make sure the tongue is in the car although it will not come with the ball. the electrical wires should also be in the box.

ask for touch up paint too!!!

2 regular keys, 1 valet, 2 remotes.

All of the owners/warranty manuals.

Don't let them wash it if you can.

Check the bumpers for knicks, rims for scratches.

Take a good look at the roof and hood. Look for scratches or adhesive where the shipping plastic was removed.

Bring a digital camera to document any defects

-check all end plastic trim pieces are installed around windshield
-make sure all end caps are installed at ends of roof rack bars
-check for all 5 tire stem air valve covers (I was missing two)
-check all window motors (especially front right pass. switch; mine would not roll back up)
-check alignment
-tire pressure (bring your own guage)
-check sideview mirror motors
-make sure rear autocloser motor works
-check windshield/rear hatch washer fluid pumps work
-wipers and lights (make sure ALL LEDS light up)
-make sure door cladding is securely fastened
-make sure wheel locks are installed (and you have the key - I ordered an extra one and threw into a safe w/ other keys)
-make sure hydraulic jack and tools are in the left rear stowage compartment
-listen to all speakers for any bad drivers/crackling
-make sure they do not apply a dealer name decal on the back (I hate those) and they won't tell you either
-test the 4wd hi & lo
-check all fuses (under dash and hood)
-check oil level
-driver seat rattle
-check for infamous sulfur smell
-scratches
-moonroof seal
-ensure you get your tonneau cover
-make sure weather stripping around doors seal properly or is not loose
-pop the hood and then close it - make sure the fitment is even on both sides
-test all remotes and keys (make sure all keys start the truck too)
-owner's manual, warranty guide, maintenance passport (schedule) book
-order a valor tip if you don't have one already
-last but not least lick the door handle and fart in the driver's seat (it's now officially yours)

When you get that sucker home I suggest you give it a thorough wash, CLAY the paint, cleaner wax, polish, wax. Take care of the paint from day one. I know, it's an anal list but I did it. I wanted to make sure everything was near perfect for my major purchase. Good luck and Congrats on your new 4runner!

Thanks for the replies. So far my checklist of things to make check extra careful includes:

1. Paint (check for clearcoat issues, nicks, scratches, and any leftover adhesive)
2. All accessories are included (hitch tongue, manuals, wiring harness, etc.)
3. Tires (switch if possible)
4. test Drive with radio/Nav off
5. Alignment (make sure steering wheel is centered)
6. Leather interior & seams
7. Touch up paint
8. All keys & remotes

Great list so far, but there has to be more. What about the rear air suspension? How would I test that to make sure it works?

No prob. It pays to be anal and take your time before you sign and drive off. This is YOUR vehicle, make it right from day one. I actually did most of this stuff on the day of delivery, probably drove the sales girl nuts, but she was good and humorous about it. I guess you can test the air susp. right then and there. To my understanding (I don't have them) there are three levels. Someone w/ them is bound to chime in.

Oh yeah one last item - check all the tires for NAILS or such. You'd be surprised. Ok, gotta go back and fold my underwear with a protractor.

i'd make sure the roof rack is installed properly, if urs comes with it.

when i got mine, i had strange whistling noise from the room at highway speed. turned out that the cross bar was installed backward. if you step onto the side board and look at the crossbar, they have an arrow with the label 'front' and 'back' to indicate the direction. if they are installed backward, you get lots of unnecessary noise.

of course it was a hassle to take the car for the repair. what's even more annoying was that while they were doing repair, they broke roof rack cover plastic. so had to wait another week for the part to arrive, not to mention taking it back for yet another repair. this happened within the first two weeks of the ownership...

you should be as anal as the member who provided the through check-list. it will save lots of time and frustration down the road.

Just got the call from my dealer. My truck just rolled onto the lot. Headed out to do my delivery checklist now.

First off, congrats. I know it's been a long wait and a tough journey in getting your special order. I'm glad its finally here.

Do a full walk through and make sure there's no dents or scratches.

For manuals, you should get a owner's manual, navigation manual, quick reference for the navigation, quick reference for the 4Runner in general, warranty booklet, maintenance log and tire warranty info.

Ask them to switch to the Michelin if you get a truck with the crappier tires (Not sure what tires come on the 18")

I got Michelin Cross Terrains on mine. I'm not sure if the dealer would swap it because of the TPMS.
