Did my lady get the best of me?

New member
First time here, and I hate being a newbie, but my lady "leaned" me toward a 2012 4runner Limited recently (she won :-)), but now I can't find much info on the Limited's actual off road capability, or aftermarket equipment to help get the vehicle's capability to where we would wish to use it.
Our goal is to be able to use it on the "way back" fire roads of Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico, for camping and the like, or just for the fun of being there.

For reference point only, our last trip in the fall, was outside DuBois Wy, in a rental Silverado. Going back down the way we came up seemed dicey, ( very steep, muddy, and washed out) so we chose another way down......Only had to cut 3 dead falls out of the road and spend 30 bucks washing the truck so the rental company didn't know where it had been. That's our idea of fun......We have also both driven Hell's Gate in RZR's (Moab) so we like steep, but that not what we want the 4runner for, nor would want to pay the price for the mistakes you can make there.

I am sure there are threads here for my situation. What is the Limited good for? All off road threads seem to be for the Trail version......Or did I really screw up here, letting the lady win? (We all know the answer to that one)!

Any thread suggestions???? Or thoughts?

There are plenty limited builds on the forums. Actually, the limited build have less too downgrade over time. Relax and read up. You will be surprised!
 
Switch out for some 17" wheels and all terrain tires and you'll go way further than any Silverado could ever hope to. I wouldn't hesitate to do Hell's Gate with it, either.

LE doesn't work off-road at all. :hat: j/k. Read the builds. There are some that do plenty off-road.
 
Limiteds are for lazy mall crawlers who pop selfie "flex-shots" on the mall curb!

You want a TE Platinum, TRD Tweaked TX Rock-Obliteration Edition with the solid Dana front and rear portal axles, 3 Locking Mechanical Differentials, Central Tire Air Management System, S/C 3UR-FE Powertrain mated to a 6-speed Auto, and of course standard LED Light bars and headlights!

J/K The Limiteds can be modified about the same as most of the other trim levels. Plenty of aftermarket goodies and stuff to get your new Limited into off-road garb. :)

(Sorry, we're a fun loving bunch and we like dragging jokes out; have no fear though, plenty of resources and information to get that Limited into off-road monster!)

Oh! Mr. Blackworks. Starting a line of smarta$$! I just can't wait to know enough abut the subject to play along. I'm a machinist and, let's say, we get pretty good at that at the shop! :-)

Any direct threads related to the 2012 Limited would be appreciated. Maybe start with tires, rims, and skid plates?.....Mongo not too bright.....hope you know the Blazing Saddles reference there. :-)

Does that mean you can make me awesome Billet stuff... I'm sorry "Shiny stuff that is often ostensibly and unnecessarily over machined so we can charge you 4 times what its worth" stuff? :D

I do some machining and one of my good buddies is a professional machinist and we always entertain ourselves with everything "billet" on the internet! Also machining is fun! :D

I actually met [MENTION=78318]RiDE[/MENTION] when he got his off-road cherry popped in Hollister with the Toyota120 guys! He's a pretty cool guy, his 4Runner is definitely not the stock 4Runner he brought that day!

Not at all. Watch this video and you'll see your new ride will do just fine for your needs. Its plush but still capable. This guy only switched out the wheels for his journey.

First time I took my 14' TE out in the Mid-Atlantic forests, there was a 10'-13' Limited with us. He had a similar lift and tires and he did just fine out there. In fact, where an obstacle took me a couple tries, he did it in one (I had the truck for 2 weeks and was a little light on the throttle - but I'm getting over that garbage!)

12' limited will go through just about anything you point it at - just accept that you'll beat up the front and rear trim a bit more than others.
 
Did the 2012 FJ Summit with just 17" TRd rims and better tires and had Shrockworks sliders. the sliders came in handy, but the truck did everything I threw at it.
