I just changed the differentials and transfer case fluids last weekend. Royal Purple 75w-90 all the way around. Put in Royal Purple 0w-20 in the last oil change, loved it so I figured I would use it in the differentials.
If it helps, I just put Royal Purple Marine Gear oil in the lower gear case of my Honda BF50 outboard. But as it's currently snowing here in NY, I haven't had a chance to try her out in the water.
Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 in the differentials. Toyota LF lube in the transfer case. Toyota 0w20 synthetic in the crankcase. Toyota WS ATF in the transmission.
Difficult to say how much I like the differential lube, it pours in fine, it helps keep the gears from wearing out, the truck rolls down the road just fine.
I changed out the original lube at about 15k miles, it was fairly dirty and had some metal partials in it. I changed it again at 50k miles and was fairly clean.
Redline 75w85 (or whatever factory specs are, I can't remember at the moment). They are the only ones I could find that make the unusual factory weight. It's pricey, but I want to put in the exact weight the manual calls for.
Just did my rear diff at 45,000. Fluid looked fine. Funny thing was there was a very small (5mm diameter) very thin (less than 0.5 mm) metal washer stuck on the magnetic drain plug in the rear diff. Anyone know what that was? Nothing has ever seemed wrong with the vehicle, so I'm not concerned, just curious. By the way, I realize changing the rear diff fluid at 45,000 may not be necessary. But it is enjoyable to just be working on the vehicle.
Did rear diff at 15k and again at 50k (dirty at 15k, clean at 50k)
Did front diff and transfer case at 60k (both were still pretty clean but changed them anyway)
Had transmission fluid changed at dealer at 60k as per recommendation in the owners manual.
You should probably at least change the rear diff lube. Then just pull the fill plugs and stick a finger in the transfer case and front diff to see how bad the lube looks. Don't try to taste the fluid off your finger, it smells bad enough even when new, but just look at it. If real black, change it out.
I would love to know where the "eats up syncros" claim came from originally. I was seriously thinking of doing Redline oils in my entire vehicle. Do you remember which forum you saw that in isam250?
I changed my rear diff at 30 ish. Used Delvac that is popular with the FJ folks. No LS additive like M1. You can buy it online from Zorotools.com for a reasonable price. I've got 10k on the Delvac and it hasn't blown up or leaked so far.
The rear is easier to change than the engine oil IMO.
I'm considering a 2-3 year interval going forward depending on how the truck is used.
I'm going to do the front and T/C this Summer but I'm in no rush after weighing all the reports i've been reading.
