Differential not engaging

So I am still searching for a 4Runner to buy. The latest one to appear on craigslist in my area seems like an "ok" buy, except for one thing.

Toyota 4 runner limited v6 4x4
"It is a 4x4 but the front servo in the front diff is stuck so it dosent want to engage"

That's a quote from his ad. Can somebody clue me in on what that actually is?

I'm guessing that there is a vacuum or electrical relay somewhere that probably controls a slave cylinder down on the differential? That's just a guess though. I have limited knowledge of 4x4 systems and even less experience wrenching on one.

If you really like it that price is reasonable. Perhaps he would split the price of a mechanic diagnosing the 4X4 problem.

Update**

Now there is a timing problem. I called the guy and he said he forgot to mention that in the ad. Too much work for too much money?

1995 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER LIMITED EDITION

Should I run away from this one?

Hmmm, in my experience there's only 2 types of timing problems. Either the engine is NOT timed correctly....or the engine CAN'T be timed correctly. The former is simple. The latter is......usually very expensive. If'n it were me I'd research the diff trouble shooting/repair threads to see what's what, and then go down there with a timing light and the proper tools and see what you can do with the timing. If anything.

Good luck on your hunt......

The "diff" problem is most likely a bad VSV or vac hose to a VSV. The VSV's lock/unlock the front axle (not the diff).

The timing issue could be a problem.
