differential oil level

I'm getting ready to change the differential fluid on my 4runner, but noticed in the owners manual that it does not tell the proper fill level for either the front or rear diff, I assume it is to the bottom of the fill hole but would like to be sure. If someone knows could you tell me the proper fill level for both differentials on the 5th gen 4runner?

Can't help you with Model Year 2011 but have attached information for Model Year 2010.

Thanks Froggy, I assume that both are to be 0-5mm below the fill hole right? I see where it says in 3-b (and the picture) that the rear should be, but the front must be on the next page.

Read Section 1. Section 1 tells how to inspect oil level without reference to front or rear. The last part of Section 1 shows difference(s) in the front/rear inspection process, that being the torque specifications for the two filler plugs

2014 4 Runner SR5 2WD:

Changed rear Differential gear oil in this vehicle for the first time today. Had driven vehicle about 30 miles before pulling drain plug. Captured every drop and let drain until it was done draining. Drained in my garage - concrete floor - flat and level.

Owners manual indicated 2.9 qts. were needed. 2.6 qts. were drained, so I was approx. 9 0z low. Was not too surprised as I've owned more than one Toyota that came low from the factory(differential oil). Also before starting, sourced 3 qts. 75W-90 GL5 along with new crush washers for the fill and drain plugs - part # 12157-10010.

Refilled with all 3 of the 32oz. bottles.There was no overflow coming out the fill plug as is usually the case when filling with the factory spec. I had some additional gear oil available and continued to fill until I got a small stream coming out the fill plug. I did not measure what was used from this 4th jug, but I'm guesstimating it was 12-16 oz.

I was thinking this differential might be one that is considered to be full using the 2.9 qt. spec., but I ran across info from the 2010 FSM posted back when from nashman69 indicating that the unit was full if oil was at the base of the fill plug hole or as much as 5mm below that. This info is available above in the post #2 PDF.

So instead of ending up with 3 qts. of rear differential oil, I have somewhere between 3 qts. 12 oz - 3 qts 16 oz.

Vehicle is running fine with no leaks as of now.
