It works great for what it is. Plus the ability to use a padlock is a nice feature. I would definitely build a stopper in above and below if at all possible. It would help keep the carrier from rotating on its axis. Should help with the life of the spindle if the latch side is locked tight as well.

Thanks for the links! I do plan on having some kind of a stopper, along with the carrier some how indexing itself into the rear bumper (kind of the same idea as your set-up). I really want this thing to be rock solid, yet fast and easy to get into the back. It's been quite the mental challenge to work around my existing bumper without major surgery, but I'm taking it one step at a time, working out from the spindle.

Here are some progress pictures, it's far from done but I'll get there soon.

The lower section of the vertical bar will be trimmed down once there is enough bracing to hold itself up.

Having the trailer really complicates things; I needed to mount the tire high enough that the tongue of the trailer wouldn't contact the spare, and if it did there was enough room between the carrier and hatch to keep the window from getting broken out. Below is a mild example of what I'm talking about:





I went as high as I could without getting crazy, I just hope it's enough...

Side shot - I will need to reinstall the factory coil spring bump stop/isolator to regain the rake I had before the carrier.

There really wasn't much; but it was fun to get out, be cold, and slide around a little! Hopefully we'll get more in the next couple days.

Small update...

I got some more work done on the carrier. I really can't do much more until I get the latch (it's been ordered), and then figure out how I'm going to "key" the other side of the carrier to keep it from moving around.

Upper support bar and bracing





I wanted the plate to fit in the carrier kind of like the 2nd gen 4Runners with rear mounted spares, but I didn't want to block the "Limited" logo.

Again, the lower section of the vertical support is going to get trimmed down.

I was wondering about how you'd compensate for the trailer, I'm a ways from having my trailer done but setting my carrier up to clear it has been in the back of my mind. Very nice work as usual, flows very nice with your existing bumper. Great work.

P.s. okay maybe not web can subscriptions but some "how to" videos or YouTube feed would be awesome.
