Well, I was really wanting to do the CO Toyota Jambo but MOAB is like an extra 30 min drive for me since they changed the location (and I've never been). So, I might as well just go to MOAB. I can't afford time off from my job to do both, and it's gonna take some talking me out of to go to the Jambo instead lol. Not to mention the Jambo is not organized what so ever, but some people like that.

Thanks Addison! I bought a DJI Phantom 4 a few months ago, this trip was my first time really using it (besides playing around with it at home). It was a nerve racking experience flying it out over Top of the World, but I'm glad I did it! What do you use?
Ah, the great IFS debate... I honestly don't know what to do. The 4Runner works awesome, and is about as far as you can go build wise with a "stock" based platform (no SAS, no LT). I'm surprised how well it works and the places I get it! Yeah it occasionally breaks stuff, but I'm also running pretty much a 37" tire (most 37's measure out to 36.5ish, my 36's were a true 36" tall).
The logical choice would be a Toyota based solid front axle, but I'm having a hard time with spending that kind of time and money on something that is only one step stronger than what I have now. Custom Landcruiser axles or fabricated 9" axles would be sweet, but that's way out of my price range! I honestly feel that one ton axles are the ticket, but I don't know if they belong under this rig. Ideally I would put them under my 2005 Double Cab Tacoma, but i'm still making payments on it and my wife isn't trilled about that idea. Haha
I would love to make another trip to Moab this fall! Let's lock down some dates and make it happen!

It was a total cluster f*ck when I went out there in 2013, but maybe it has changed since then?

Well, I'm all for different dates for a MOAB trip instead.
I just know if I'm doing a 5+ hour trip for wheeling, and MOAB is only 30 min extra, I'm going there instead lol.

The Moab video isn't working for me, unfortunately, it's just a white square.

Thank you, and good question! I'm actually glad you asked...
The ring and pinion in a differential has two sides; drive and coast (there are several other terms). When going forward the ring and pinion contact is significantly stronger than going in reverse, and the pinion will try to pull the ring gear into itself. In reverse the teeth want to slip past each other, and the pinion tries to push the ring gear away.
When you first set up a differential you have a certain amount of preload (tightness) that you want to achieve. It's actually hard to spin the drive flange by hand. Over time everything sets in and wears a little, and the adjusters will back off a little. It gets to the point where you can easily spin it by hand. In a hard reverse situation the pinion will push against the ring gear, and the extra play allows the pinion to slip, and thats when it all goes to hell.

We've made this event not organized on purpose. Nothing against the FJ Summit or that Tacoma event but I hate being told when I can stop to take pictures, go to the bathroom, when to take a lunch, etc... Jambo is just show up, talk to other people, find out what they drive and what trails they want to run and do it. Simple as that.

And just a heads up, Montrose to Moab is closer to 2.5 hrs away. Nowhere near 30 minutes. It's 1.5 hrs from GJ.

Don't get me wrong, I like both scenarios. I didn't mean to offend anyone. Some events are better organized than others. I won't turn down ANY event, organized or not, but when it comes to being 5-1/2 hours away there's a higher level of dedication involved (for me anyways).

I was referring to the distance from Denver to MOAB vs to Montrose. It's roughly 30 min difference.

Yah that was my opinion of it also. I am sure it's still pretty fun but I would personally rather go outside of the event. I like "getting away" when I go on wheeling/camping trips. I am sure we could round up a pretty good posse of our own too!
Oh and if anyone wants to come to Canada - Our Colossal event is Sept 23-26th. Registration opens in the next couple weeks. Would love to have some t4r OG's make the drive! lol
Footage looks good. We might be picking up a second drone and the Phantom 4 is on our short list. Definitely a cool perspective once you get into the aerial stuff. We shoot with an Inspire 1 Pro.
Lol yes the age old debate for sure! I just see your 4Runner slowly getting more "hardcore" so I figured one day you would get tired of breaking sh*t and cut the IFS out. You bring up a good point about marginal increase in capability though unless you go all-out. I personally love watching this rig go all these crazy places (through your thread) with a relatively simple IFS setup. And I guess if you don't mind turning wrenches to fix the broken stuff, then just keep using it and enjoying it!
Not gunna lie, I'd be pretty pumped for a Dirtco SAS'd 2nd Gen Taco.

Is this a one time event, or will it happen 2018/2019? I don't think I can squeeze it in with all I want to do in 2018 (financially), but could see it 2019. Plus it gives me time to FINALLY get a passport..haha

Not gunna lie... without Aaron's eye for the line on Hell's Gate when I was in Moab a couple years ago, I probably wouldn't have done it either. Spotted me like a pro though and I didn't even lift a tire in my LX. Moab reminiscing big time right now!

On to the rear differential...
I debated rebuilding it myself, but East Coast Gear Supply did such a great job the first time around that I decided to give them a call and explain the situation. It was out of the warranty period, but they agreed to look it over and see what they could do. They emailed me a Fed-Ex return slip and I shipped it back to them.
I honestly wasn't expecting much, it was going on six years since the diff was built and it saw some serious trail usage. But I sent it back to them and waited to see what would happen. I checked the tracking number Monday afternoon and it showed that it had been dropped of that morning, one day early. I figured it would be there for a couple days, but I checked my email later that day and they had already sent me a tracking number! Being that they are on the east coast they were already closed for the day, so I called them Tuesday morning. They rebuilt my diff that day and had it back on the FedEx truck that afternoon, now thats service!
Now came the question of price, the sales tech transferred me over to the warranty department and I waited on hold for a couple minutes. I knew it wasn't going to be 100% covered, but I was hoping they would work with me a little bit. First I thanked them for getting it in and out so fast, and then asked what the total would be. I'm not going to say the exact number because it's determined on a case by case basis, but I will say this, they were more than fair about the price and nice about it too.
I'm honestly blown away, to even offer a five year warranty on a differential in this industry is crazy, but to go past that and still make things right, that's top notch service!
So how exactly do you ship a 73 pound diff across America twice? Action Packer to the rescue! It held up great, and the built in handles made it easier to move around than a regular box.
I packed it with scraps of foam from my new sleep platform.
Here it is, I just need to get it back in the 4Runner.
