Dirtco's 1999 4Runner Build

Incredible build! Hey I recognize Brody's truck on pg. 12, love that truck!!!

Thanks! I think your mistaken about about your buddys truck, I wasn't wheeling with anyone named Brody, but I might know who your talking about. Does he have a black exo caged Toy with a 3.4 swap?

Overall I am happy with the 4Runner. It’s very comfortable, powerful and it seems like it should be pretty capable on the trail (I need to run a couple more trails and get it in some deep snow before I can really answer that question).

With any build you’re going to have issues, and I’ve had a few. First the small stuff:

The rear brakes were acting up after my trip to Wheeler Lake, so I replaced the shoes, springs and the drums. I plan on doing the Tundra upgrade up front once I get some of the other stuff on my list taken care of.

I noticed some noises in the front suspension, I found that the front sway bar end links had loosen up so I used some blue Loctite and retightened it. There’s something else that feels loose through the steering wheel but everything in the front suspension is tight, I really don’t know what it is. I think I need more time on the trail to pin point it.

And the worst problem that REALLY pisses me off, the supercharger is leaking again after spending a LOT of money to have Magnuson rebuild it!:redbrick: I noticed some oil leaking after I installed it, so I took some pictures and cleaned it thinking it might be oil in the seal from assembly.

After my trip I noticed the same leak again :(

So I have to take the supercharger back off and send it back to Magnuson. It’s not the hardest job in the world but it means I’ll be without a vehicle for another three weeks, and I’m going to miss a wheeling trip that I wanted to go on. :dammit:

quick question

Im a "newbie" to all this forum stuff and i just added a 3inch lift and 33inch tires to my 4runner and i know the tires kill power and gas mileage and i was interested in gears i have the 3.4 motor and i dont know what gears and etc. i need.

^^^^ YOU ^^^^^ need to start a new thread. A build this enjoyable can't be cluttered with off topic posts.

Dirtco,

That sucks on the nose cone man. You could buy the whole nose cone assembly from toyota, but then you've still got to yank the S/C and I'm sure you want what you paid for from Magnuson.

You're as bad as me though... one little leak and you won't take it in the woods. My truck is leaking a couple drops of gear oil from the front output shaft on the T-case every time I park it and the undercarriage is slowly getting sprayed with gear oil when I drive it. I bought the tools & parts, but it's currently parked until I can replace that output shaft seal.

I don’t think you can buy nose cones for the 1st gen. S/C from Toyota anymore. As you know Magnuson manufactured the superchargers for Toyota; when they rebuilt my S/C I was told that my nose cone was 100% trash and that they don’t even make them anymore, they had to “Modify” a GM S/C nose cone to replace mine (it looks identical BTW), that’s why it’s silver instead of the normal cream color. Magnuson is going to warranty the repair and install my 2.2 pulley while it’s there, I’m just out the time it takes to remove / install it and the time I don’t have a vehicle to drive.

Yeah I’m the same way, you could say I’m borderline OCD when it comes to my vehicles. :D

I did get my ARB compressor installed, but I need to finish wiring it. I also teed off the pressure switch port so I can use it as a back up compressor when I run out of CO2.

I used masking tape to mock up my sliders, the main support and legs will be 3/16” 2x2 square tubing with a round tubing kick out. I got all the square steel cut and ready to go, I just need to make some frame plates and start bending some tube.

I was wondering about that color difference.

Good to hear they're going to take care of you. When you're doing business across state lines, the removal/shipping/fixing/shipping back/install time is just part of the deal I guess.

Yeah, that’s what makes it frustrating; three days to CA, five days at Magnuson (they are going to try to expedite the process, but that’s if they can “fit it in”) and three days back to CO. If I get lucky I’ll have it right before the weekend of the 19th, but it might be the following week.

It went a lot faster the second time around

I go wheeling just about every weekend (more during the fall and spring), and I always air down. Airing down, and filling back up is always a PITA, so I bought some Monster Valves from Powertank to speed the process up. You install them opposite of the stock valve stem. It’s a little scary drilling holes in your nice wheels but after the first one it’s not that bad. It now takes 43 seconds to air up my 35x12.50x17 tire from 0 – 30 psi (yes, I timed it :D). That’s just awesome!

I was a little concerned about a rock coming inside the wheel and breaking the extra valve stem, so I bought a couple plugs to replace the valves if I need to. I really doubt that will happen, but you need to prepare for the worst.

And the attention to detail never ceases to amaze. Those monster valves are sweet. I am curious though...why not just replace the factory stems with those? Instead of adding them in extra....

Where did you get that Airaid intake tube? That thing is slick.

Thanks man! The kit comes with a really nice clip on gauge, you clip it on the stock valve stem and watch the pressure as you air up/down. It goes so fast that you really need to watch the pressure on a gauge. That also means I can fill up at a regular air pump if I need to and check my pressure with a standard air gauge.

The Airaid Intake tube keeps the stock air box, I'll see if I can find a part number for you.

wow! awesome frickin build! i LOVE the color combo, never seen that one before! its an oem color right? a lot of awesome stuff going on here. im a fancy valve stem kinda guy myself, never seen those monsters but damn they are sweet! nice work!

Yes please!

I want to do the intake silencer removal mod but perhaps this is 'easier'...

Ah, understood, makes perfect sense. Sounds almost like a must-have for 35's that get aired down often.

And yes, that's what caught my eye about the Airaid. It's just a really nice ISR mod basically, and I hadn't ever seen it before. If you can find a part number, that would rock. Even though my rig is for sale, I'm still doing stuff to it, lol. And I'll probably end up keeping it anyway!
