I'm still waiting on the supercharger, it looks like I won't see it until after Thanksgiving. I'm still keeping busy working on random projects.
I pushed the 4Runner into the shop this weekend, I wanted to work on the sliders but it’s a little hard when I can’t move the vehicle. So I worked on the rear cargo area so I can get all my wheeling gear in place. I didn’t finish the project but I did make some progress.
The plan is to install a 1st Gen 4Runner roll bar; it will be a good base to mount all my stuff and since I’ve always been a 1st Gen guy, it adds a touch of nostalgia to the new 4Runner.
The front legs have to be cut down to fit the 3rd Gen 4Runner, most people re-use the stock plates but I had a set of Ballistic plates that have four mounting holes and are more heavy duty.

Before I could bolt the roll bar in place I needed to figure out a better storage solution. I carry a lot of gear with me, and since I do a ton of wheeling without much notice it needs to be in the truck at all times. Here’s a picture of the Turbo 4Runner and all my gear, the cargo area of the 3rd Gen is even smaller.
I decided to build a removable rack that will bolt to the roll bar and hold two Action Packers above the subwoofer box along with my Hi-Lift, it will have expanded steel on the bottom.

Very nice. Living in the flatland, sometimes I forget how important it is to be able to strap everything large/heavy/important down...so it doesn't fly everywhere when the truck is being wheeled.

Thanks, I really hate stuff moving around while I’m wheeling and there’s also the safety factor. The last thing I want is for some cargo to crack someone’s head open, or on the lower end of the scale break a window, etc. Everything will be organized, secure, and easy to get to.

I’ve wanted to come up with a storage solution for a long time, the new 4Runner was the perfect opportunity for that.More progress

That's a pimp ass storage solution. I like seeing how people tailor them to their needs. Although my dogs wouldn't like that one very much... it would take up all of their "travel bed" room.
I notice you left some room underneath, I'm assuming that's so you can still slide large (long) items into the cargo area if needed?
Nice taste in subwoofers too. Looks like an Inifity Kappa Perfect to me. I green Kappas for years. They put out monster bass, while still being very musical.

I really don’t know what to say, I’ve been wheeling for years and have a good idea of what works for me and what I like. When I sold the Turbo 4Runner I did a ton of research on this site, and others to find the best recipe for a good all around IFS 3rd Gen. 4Runner. It’s been a lot of work, but it will be worth it. Thanks again!

Thanks! BigFish’s build is awesome and his attention to detail is amazing! Not only that but he has documented everything, it’s a real wealth of information.
Like you said, my 4Runner is geared more towards wheeling and camping but it’s still my daily driver. The whole reason I sold my last 4Runner and built this one was so I could have a more comfortable and well rounded vehicle, that’s why I chose selectable lockers and the lowest lift I could run. It’s nice to know that I can install some 35” all terrains (if I ever need to), commute in comfort, and have a very capable rig. This is by far the most well rounded rig I have ever built!
Thanks! My dog won’t ride in the back, it scares the crap out of her (she is a rescue) so she rides in the back seat. She doesn’t like vehicles very much, but I hope after some time she’ll come around.
Yes, I can still slide large items under the cargo rack if I need to. The other nice thing is I can sleep in the back of the 4Runner if I need to, I have my trailer but in an emergency it’s a nice option.
Good eye! I’ve always liked the Infinity speakers, this subwoofer was used but in great shape and the price was right (Free!). Your right, they sound really good (especially Rock, they are crisp and clear), it’s a good combo with the Alpine headunit and amp. I would love to get some nice component speakers but that’s down the road.
Thanks, I’ve been wheeling for a long time and I’ve had my share of breakage/issues. I hate to carry so much gear, but I REALLY hate being stranded out in the middle of nowhere without the proper tools, parts, recovery gear, food, water, survival gear, etc.
After a full day of being stuck and working your butt off, without clean water, food, or the proper equipment you will understand!

My shop has an old Snap-On 220 Mig welder, but I think it's a rebadged Lincoln (I also have a little Lincoln 110 running flux core that I use when the shop welder is down). I wish I had access to a plasma but I don't, I used a sawzall with a metal blade to cut all the steel (along with a cut-off wheel). I also don't have a tubing notcher, so I use the sawzall or a cut-off wheel and hand grind all the tubing notches. It's a ton of work, but if your motivated you'll find a way.

It has been quite the week, I’ll start with the good and work my way to the bad…
My supercharger came in the day before Thanksgiving; I was excited to have my truck back so I took half the day off to reinstall it (Since Magnuson royally screwed up the first time and it was leaking oil, but they also stripped out the EGR bolt holes, and it looked like a 1st grader sealed together). I also sent them a URD 2.2 pulley to install while they had it apart (since they over tightened the stock pulley and I couldn’t take it off). The added power from the 2.2 pulley, combined with the URD 7th injector kit, really make the 4Runner run awesome!
I wanted to get the cargo area wrapped up, so I went through all my gear/tools and got them organized.
I also got my Hi-lift jack installed in it’s new home. I always pull the base off them (that’s what makes all the rattling noise), it’s in one of the Action Packers.
Fire Extinguisher mounted with a Poly Performance quick release mount. It only takes a second or two to release it, and it will take a beating without falling apart.
I needed to find a way to secure my cooler, so I made some stops to hold it in place and used a seatbelt to hold the cooler down. It makes it quick and easy to get inside, and it keeps the cooler from sliding around.
