Dirtco's 1999 4Runner Build

I got my Rigid Industries Dually D2’s installed (Amber/Driving), they should work good for snow and dusty conditions. I wired them to the factory fog light harness. They seem bright in the shop but I still need to test them out in real world conditions.

And as you can see in the last pictures I went out a did a little snow wheeling!:D

The 4Runner did great and I made it a lot further than I thought I would (I still need to wire the ARB compressor, so I was open in the front). I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

I ran into a bunch of blown down trees that were blocking several trails; we had some very powerful wind a few weeks ago (115mph at the top of Peak 8 in Breck) and I figured this would happen. It looks like I need to get a chainsaw before spring.

And that was the end of my fun :redbrick:

I decided to check the supercharger, it seemed like a good idea since I installed it less than 50 miles ago and I was out in the middle of the woods. After I opened the hood I was greeted with this B*LLSH*T :gun5:

Awesome updates, save for those last two pictures. Man, I would be pissed. As I'm sure you are. And Magnuson would not be getting ANY more business from me. Except to make this latest screwup right. What is their deal? Aren't they supposed to be a main line supercharger shop? How can their quality control be this sh*tty?

Maybe its just a bit of oil that was on the outside of the pulley shaft or something. I say clean it off, go for a test drive, check it, THEN choose an appropriate emotion. lol

BTW, how is that rear cargo setup working out? Sure looked awesome and functional!

That's what I thought after I first installed it, I had a few oil spots after my first test drive so I washed it and drove it for a couple days. I checked it again and there was more oil, so again I washed (the day before I went wheeling). That picture was taken half way through the day, by the end of tha day there was double the oil on the front of the engine, oil on the underside of the hood, battery, air box, pretty much everywhere. It's leaking, and it's leaking a lot worse than before.

I love the cargo set up! Everything is easy to get to, organized and secure. I was concerned about visability out the back window but it's better than I thought it would be. I can see just fine unless someones really tailgating me and in that case I would rather not watch them. It helps that my last truck had a spare tire that blocked the whole back window and I'm used to using my mirrors.

Yeah, I’m pissed! I actually had to wait a few days to post this because I was so angry.

Magnuson is the manufacture for the TRD superchargers, that’s the reason I went with them for the rebuild. I figured they would be the best people to do the job, and I paid top dollar for that. I could rant on for several pages but I’ll try my best to hold back, the quality of their work sadly speaks for itself. This is the thing that sucks, if you have a 1st gen SC your pretty much stuck going with them because they no longer manufacture the nose cone for that model, and they have to custom machine a different model to work.

When I sent the supercharger back the 2nd time they told me they were going to replace the nose cone, but they didn’t. They just replaced the seal (maybe) and installed my new pulley.

Well thats bad news then. Talk to Magnuson yet?

Yes, I talked to them (maybe the word “talk” isn’t the best description), they gave me two options. One, send the whole SC back for a 3rd time and they would expedite the process as much as they can. Or two, they could send me a replacement nose cone and I could do the work myself. After being without a vehicle for two months dealing with this, I went with option two. I should be able to pull the SC and replace the nose cone in a day, I really don’t want to tear it apart for a third time but I don’t have much of a choice.

The nose cone came in on Friday.

I've never seen it knotted before. Interesting. I would love to see what knot they are using. (a closeup and better shot)

From that picture it looks to me to be some version of Fisherman's knot. But it is hard to see. It's unfortunate that they used a knot to tie in the hook, as even the best knot will only hold about 80% of the rope's tensile strength. And if it is a Fisherman's knot, then it's less than 70%.

(bowline and figure 8 being the best with the 8 approaching 80%)

On a 20+ thousand lb line i dont think its too much of a worry. plus the sheath make that thing way more sturdy to abrasion and what not. My tg winchline is amsteel blue and those fibers are so fine.

I was going to say it looks like a fisherman's too.

Like J-Money said, It’s knotted because the whole line is covered in a sheath and there is no way to splice it.

From their website…

"-The Superline XD synthetic winch line is manufactured with the most advanced technology in synthetic rope manufacturing today. The rope starts as a larger diameter line and is heated and stretched down to its final diameter, just like our regular Superline. This process gives the Superline XD an excellent breaking strength since it has the strength of a larger diameter line in a smaller diameter. The pre-stretching also gives the rope better abrasion resistance compared to normal Dyneema winch ropes.

-For even more abrasion resistance, the rope has a tightly braided cover along the whole length of the rope. This cover gives the inner Superline core excellent protection against abrasion, especially abrasion from dirt and sand. With coverless winch lines, dirt and sand can get lodged in between the strands of the rope and can cause fraying, which in some cases leads to a 20% loss in the rope's breaking strength. The Superline XD cover keeps dirt and sand out of the core and prevents this abrasion from happening. It also gives the inner core complete protection from UV rays. Ultimately this means that if used properly, the Superline XD will last much longer than a normal winch line, and you won't have to replace your line nearly as often. "

I don’t know much about knots, but it seems strong. From what I have read it’s the best winchline you can buy. I had the Amsteel blue for one season and I got stuck in a spot where the line snapped four times trying to get unstuck. The Superline XD should hold up to the elements a lot better, and it’s a lot stronger. It doesn't even feel like rope, it feels like steel.

^ Yeah, that sounds like a really nice product.

The benefit of having the full length sheath will greatly outweigh having to tie a knot in the end. Especially in terms of longevity. Keeping the core clean, and protected from the sun will be so nice.
