Dirtco's Adventure Thread

The following morning we woke up and had breakfast, Drake showed up in his lime green Jeep Comanche and we officially had the entire crew together. We continued through the 4Mile area where we followed Aspen Ridge (along with a couple scenic detours) down into Salida.

And thats when I noticed something wasn’t right with the 4Runner. The suspension was setting at weird angles every time I parked, and the front seemed to be setting a lot higher than the rear. Driving on the highway was even worse, and was pretty much like BJ Baldwin blasting through the streets of Cuba with one tire up in the air! After getting to the next section of dirt (just off Marshall Pass) I inspected the vehicle and found the issue. I installed some 2.5” coil spacers in the rear of the 4Runner to level it out, they were a temporary fix until I could dial in the front suspension and get the correct rear spring. It turns out the the spacers tore, and the coils shifted, folding in on themselves like a Slinky. Because of this the spring rate was drastically reduced and going around even a small corner resulted in the 4Runner leaning over and setting on the bump stop.

At this point I didn’t have many options. I didn’t have a coil spring compressor to remove the spacers, and even if I did the coil springs were bent and compromised. We tried a few things to get the springs to set straight, but nothing really worked that well and it sure wasn’t safe for any kind of on-road travel.

So we found a decent camp spot a couple miles away from the parking area and spent the rest of the afternoon and night hanging out. The following morning Nick and I went over the rest of the route and he continued on with Rick, Kyle and Drake. Aaron’s dad brought up a truck/trailer and Aaron towed my rig back home for me.

Does it suck? Yes, but I couldn’t think of a better group of friends to break down with! These trips are more about hanging out and BS’ing than actually wheeling, and that’s what we did. On top of that Aaron drove half way across the state to get me and my truck home in one piece!

Stupid spacer! :mad2:

Believe it or not, folks, my rig is directly behind Dirtco's rig in this photo. His just totally eclipses mine.

Big Spoon > little spoon :D

I'm glad you were able to make it for the trip! :thumb3:

Definitely a great trip, and I'm glad I could finally make it happen. Thanks again to all of you for keeping me in the loop.

I didn't take the usual number of photos either, but I got a few good ones.

I think I'm going to have to get in on this annual trip, next year. I'm always down for bs'ing, camping, and wheeling.

i was going to call dibs on the 861s until i saw you made a pretzel out of them

if you guys aren't careful you might end up with a lot of people (like me) wanting to join these expeditions.
especially if the jambo gets moved to wyoming

As if we need more evidence that Volcom is probably the nicest dude in the wheeling community...

Looks like a great trip other than demolishing your 861s!

Hell of a shakedown run! The unexpected stuff is the most memorable anyway, with the right group of people. Glad it was nothing major.

Truck is looking so sick amigo, really want to see it in person! As always a very well thought out build.

What is the deal with Jambo this year? Haven't seen anything on it yet. I was out of state last year unfortunately, but have been looking forward to catching up with everyone.

It will be in Colorado. Can't have a Colorado Toyota Jamboree anywhere else! I'm in charge of it next year.

Jambo happened two weekends ago in Montrose, CO. Last two Jambo's have been in Montrose. I'm thinking about moving the Jambo back to the BV area for next year. All the pics of the event are on our Facebook page Colorado Toyota Jamboree

Thanks Jim! It could've been lot worse, just a stupid part to fail. Glad to see your back in Colorado, we'll have to do some wheeling once I get the bugs worked out.

Yup - if things go as planned the stories aren't as good.

You are correct, just makes for good campfire stories! :D

The rear coil springs have been fixed, I bought a set of the OME 850’s. These have the same spring rate as the 861’s but are designed to set about 1.75” taller. Here is a copy and paste from Toytec’s website:

Front Coil Options:
2851 - Stock/Light Load (0-110 lbs) 2" lift
2850 - Heavy load (110-250 lbs) 2" lift
2850J - Extended Height Coils 3" lift (Requires 60070L Shocks) **
2861 - Low height heavy load (110-250 lbs) .25" lift

I also called Accutune and had them work their magic for the front springs. I was running a 16” 250lb lower spring and a 14” 150lb spring, in order to drop the front down an inch I swapped out the upper spring with 14” 125lb spring. This was perfect, I now have a frame height of 24” with 4” of up travel not including the small built in bumpstops (or 23.5” with 3.5” of up travel if I back the truck in the garage).

With the new springs installed I went on a short test drive behind my house. The stance is noticeably better!
