Disadvantages of 17" wheels

Hi There,

We'll be purchasing a LE early next year, so doing all of my research. I was wondering if there are any disadvantages to going with 17" wheels on a LE?

Also is it possible to have the stock 20" wheel swapped for SR5 wheels at purchase usually?

I was torn between an SR5 and LE, and two of the LE turn-offs (for me) were the Escalade-ish wheels, and (for me) the skinny tires on a hunky vehicle. Some research also turned up a limited, and costly, selection of tires.

Not having the advantage of knowledge from this forum, I didn't realize the options open to me. Were I to do an LE now, I'd make a tire/wheel swap part of the deal.

You're the customer - anything's possible, you just have to make it so.

Thanks for all of the feedback. We wont be doing a lot of off roading, but we do quite a bit of camping and plan to do more, further a field now the kids are getting older, so probably the most would be fire roads etc, but I was a boy scout so like to be prepared . Also given it seems to be about a $2000 item to swap the wheels and tires after the fact, I figured if it was done when we purchased, the cost may be reduced.

We currently own an Audi A4 quatro and the closest we came to a 4x4 SUV was a Honda Pilot 4x4, which we sold because it felt like a boat to drive. We have rented a 4runner 5th gen LE for a weekend camping trip and liked the fairly firm ride and the obvious truck feel, the pilot always felt like it didn't know if it was a car or a truck. But the LE we rented had 20" rims, so was wondering how different the ride would be on 17" rims.

Thanks again for the feedback, I'm still undecided, if I can get the dealer to swap the rims at no cost I'll probably go with the 17". We have a while before purchase, just getting my ducks in a row.

Just enjoy your new rig Jonathan. IF for some reason (don't go by Forum chat) you decide a swap is needed make sure you drive the rig with 17"s
first. I have driven 4 new SR5's while making my decision and every one had a horrible balance issue (62mph shake) sometimes an easy fix, sometimes not.
As for Forums - they would not exist if not for modification. Matters not Toyota, Jeep, Camaro, etc.
Read enough here and you will come to believe that almost everything needs to be changed, lifted, tweaked or modified in some way.
Drive it. Enjoy it and if you find your New LE simply can not do something you needed it to do because of a design deficiency - I will be surprised.

FWIW, the 20's aren't the reason 5th gen LE feels heavy and soft. It's the weight and the suspension.
17's will do everything the 1st couple of replies in this thread said they'd do, but they won't do much for the ride on the freeway. Pretty much every 5th gen owner does a double-take the 1st time they really hit the brakes in one of these trucks.

20" wheels and tires are worth more than 17" tires and wheels. I bet if you buy a Limited, you can find a guy with an SR5 who will swap tires and wheels with you AND give you $1000.
