Disconnecting Xreas = Computer Error message?

Greetings all, long time lurker - first post. For months I have read posts about swaping out the Xreas system by replacing all 4 shocks with Bilstein 5100's. I took my 05 Sport Edition in to a large offroad shop yesterday and they refused to put on Bilstein 5100's - they claim the Xreas is connected to the 4Runners computer system and that it will cause an error message and an idiot light on the dash which won't let it pass the smog test + it could also effect the ABS brake system...??

So is this all BS ? I have noticed many posts from members that have "ditched the xreas system" and no one has ever mentioned any problems with computer error messages. - I have researched this forum and found info. saying Xreas is not connected to the computer or ABS.

I'm hoping to hear from those of you that have removed your Xreas system to confirm there have not been any issues with the computer, error messages on the dash, passing smog, or ABS system, etc. Could some of you that have done this swap help put my mind at ease ?

Your right, their wrong!. I personally haven't removed my XREAS but I disconnected the front shocks to install spacers and I can confirm thru doing that and thru hours of research on here that XREAS is a completely mechanical system and in no way attached to ABS, so there will be no error code.
 
Its a mechanical/hydraulic "dumb" system. There are no computer controls, it works without and electronic aid. I think they are confusing the airbag system...
 
Nope, they've got no clue what they're talking about. I removed mine, no issues at all. A lot of shops confuse the xreas lines with the abs, so it's possible that this is a honest mistake, or they could be trying to avoid working on it.
 
They're way wrong. The lines connect opposite corners to each other via a hydraulic accumulator that's mounted on the frame rail. They can leave all the lines in place. When you undo the big fittings near each shock- they have check valves that keep the pressure and fluid in so there isn't going to an explosion for anything. I removed my system myself.
 
When my XREAS system failed there were no warning lights on the dash. It is not linked to anything computerized.

My "warning" came from a gradual loss of suspension, and the puddle of fluid in the driveway from the leak in the driver's side line between shocks.

XREAS replacement was far too costly, so the lines were disconnected and new shock absorbers were installed.

No issues whatsoever with any sort of error codes.
 
They probably saw the XREAS system and got intimidated and made some excuse to avoid the embarrassment of saying "we're scared to work on your truck." If a place tells you this either 1. They truly believe this or 2. They are intimidated. Either way, you should probably take it some place else as I wouldn't want them touching my truck if it's any of these two.

Just wanted to thank everyone that replied back.

The "Technicians" made it sound like that the people on this forum were a bunch of shade tree hacks, and removing XREAS would destroy the computer system on the 4Runner. Your feed back convinced me to persue this futher and find another shop that has done this install on several other 4Runners with XREAS. I should have the Bilstein 5100's + FJ springs installed on my 4Runner by next week - all your comments were much appreciated.
 
i had the xreas pulled off....i have to still say that the xreas, when working properly, is a better riding/handling system on-road than my current bilstein 5100/fj spring setup.
That being said, i wasn't willing to spend the thousands the rape artist dealership wanted to fix just the one leaky side of my system.

I can't describe why it is different...the front is great, but over bumps the rear still feels too stiff. Also, i find the truck feels way 'bouncier' laterally...not so much up and down now.

Wait... I'm a shade tree hack? Oh crap! Don't tell my Service Manager! The Dealership might get mad! LoL
 
Doing the same thing!

I'm excited...I have 135,000 on my 2003 SE, and 3 of the 4 Xreas shocks are leaking.

I found FJ springs on the FJ site and have ordered the 5100's from offroadwarehouse. So...hopefully early in 2012 I will have a report.

Still trying to decide if I can do it myself. Don't want to get it up on the stands and get hung up on one nut, or an inability to compress a shock or spring.

You all are great and have been since 2003 when I first joined. (lost my old password).

Right now every bump feels like its going right to the frame...it is agonizing.

would a stiffer spring stop the 'wobble' or body roll i am experiencing?
