4 X 4RUNNER

New member
Ok guys i did something stupid i recently purchased a 4runner with a 22re and it does not start, so i pulled the distributor out to test it. I forgot to mark the position of the rotor so now i dont know where to put it when i put the distributor back in. Any way i can figure out the right position of the rotor so i dont f up the firing order? Your help is much appreciated.

Line up the timing marks, TDC. Check it by pulling the plug and feeling for the piston with a wire.
Figure out which post on the rotor cap is #1, and line up the rotor with it. Might be off by a tooth in one direction or the other, but this usually works first try.

TDC is Top Dead Center. It is when a piston is at the top/peak of it's stroke.
You should really get a service manual and read up a bit before attempting.

Top Dead Center for number 1 cylinder. Found this nice video a few months ago
YouTube - Installing a 22RE / 22R distributor

Made by a company that rebuilds and ships engines, found it very informative. You WILL need to time the engine after you're done. Good luck.

fourwd1 posted while I was typing. I would also recommend reading a service manual so you're familiar with other things. They also come with troubleshooting sections to help with basic problems
