DIY Awning in a bag - with pics

Came up with my own DIY Awning for whatever. Online store refers to your Prime membership

Materials list (mostly from Home Depot):
(1) 6'x8' Heavy Duty Tarp - $7.98
(2) 3'-6' Steel Extension Pole - $9.87 each **
(2) 1/2" PVC Coupling - $.69 each **
(2) 3/8"x1/2" Brass Adapter Barb - $3.74 each **
(2) Husky Single Hangalls Medium - $5.97 each
(4) Stakes (used old tent stakes)
(4) 8' to 10' parachord (used left over 330 Parachord)

** - these items could be replaced with the following:
(2) Coleman Steel Replacement Poles - $13.99 each, online store
used for camping, they have the narrow end to fit thru the grommets on the tarp.

I don't keep mine in a bag yet, but found I could buy a folding chair bag for $6 online.

Nice....I've been kicking around something similar using a Kelty tarp. It's HUGE though for this purpose (12' square). Instead of connecting two corners to the truck I'm leaning more toward only attaching one to the roof rack. The opposite end of the ridgeline will go to a single pole then the two "sides" straight to the ground. I've got a variety of leftover poles from some tents that could be pressed into service to raise the corners for some more headroom.

We've found that with our Kelty 16 (which is way too big but nice to have sometimes) the best arrangement is to make the ridegeline on a diagonal between two trees (using a camp chair as a stool to get it good an high). Then tie one corner off to the 4runner far side of the roof rack while runner is parked parallel to ridgeline, and remaining corner (opposite of 4runner corner) to an extendable pole like shown above if it's drier, but heavy rain it needs to be straight to the ground or cata-cut sides "in betweener" loops needs to be tied downward to let water flow off. Gives plenty of walking room and dry access to the side door of the 4runner.

I've been thinking about making one. My plan is to use a cheap 5.5x7.5' tarp. It's small, but the roof rack is not very long, and the size is similar to ARB tarps, I think. I'll mount a 2x4 to the roof rack with some U bolts, then I'll sandwich the tarp between that and a small wood strip and screw it together at reqular intervals. So the wood strip will clamp the tarp and hopefully be less likely to rip in high wind. I bought square U-bolts for this purpose.

For the other end I'll roll the far edge of the tarp around a piece of metal conduit and screw it in at regular intervals with self tapping sheet metal screws. Then I'll drill a small hole in each end of the metal conduit for the top of my Kelty adjustable tarp poles. The friction of the tarp rolled around the conduit at least one wrap should prevent pressure points at the screws in high wind. So I won't unroll it all the way.

Setup will use 1-2 guy lines on each tarp staked to the ground. One guyline at a 45 degree angle would do it, but two at 90 degrees apart like OP's picture would be better.

For storage I'll roll up the tarp around the metal conduit. The conduit will be slightly longer than the tarp, and I'll secure the ends to the 2x4 with those metal clips that hold brooms and mops. I might tie it with some extra paracord for added security so it can't fall off while driving. I might add a cover or something to keep it clean, but I haven't thought about how to do that yet.

This really seems like a great, inexpensive option. We could really use something like this for our camping trip this weekend!
