DIY bumper questions

I'm considering building my own rear bumper out of plate.

I know that others have taken this on, on a variety of generations of 4R's. (mine happens to be a 4th gen)

My biggest question at the moment is material thickness. I'm very concerned about weight. I'm strongly considering building the bulk of the bumper from 1/8" plate but using 3/16's or even 1/4" on the core areas.

Take a CBI bumper attached... does anyone know the thicknesses? Are my suggestions reasonable?

I have a plan. I think I can build it pretty cheap.

I wonder if there would be a market for a DIY kit. Where you weld all the pieces together. Hmmm...

Where you weld is up to the buyer. I know some companies already offer build it yourself kits for bumpers.

Probably because it's a fairly new product? Not sure why. But an aluminum bumper would be nice, maybe with a nice black anodize finish too.

Yeah, but I don't have a TIG, and even if I did i'm not that good with one.

BTW, a guy on the 120 forum responded to a similar post saying he used 1/4" on the structurally important areas and 10 gauge for the rest. Kind of interesting.
 
Any areas that will see rubbing or any sort of trail contact should be 3/16 or thicker. Only the cosmetic panels should be any thinner. Structural ribbing or frame mounting areas should be 3/16 or thicker.
 
I am very interested in getting a DIY rear bumper.

I contacted 4x4 labs awhile back and they didn't have any kits available, I just pinged him again to see if that has changed.

Seems like there are a few designs floating around would be nice if someone would sell the CAD files.

I contacted CBI about this recently, they are highly reluctant to send you the cnc steel only. There are no instructions. They don't want you to be unhappy with the finished product. But it sounded like they would if you really really really wanted it. Maybe you can be the guinea pig. Please everyone do not go calling CBI about this...PM me for more details.

I'm going to do the NWTI front bumper here in the next two weeks (shipping today). Depending on how much of a PITA that is I will decide if I want to DIY the rear (haven't found a vendor) or pay someone to make it for me (CBI).

Received an email back from Luke at 4x4labs...looks promising:

I am currently re designing the sides for that version 4runner. I'll
have some parts to test out in a week or so. I can get a hold of you
when we're ready.
