DIY: Gobi Stealth Roof Rack/Ladder Install

Thanks for the reply Jicko. I appreciate the photos. It looks like I haven't seen a photo of the Ranger before. What I saw was the Stealth. The description I quoted is a bit misleading. It is not flat and level at the front, it rises.

Doing home repairs and carpentry I often need to haul long lumber. When I order my roof rack I may opt for the Utility Rack which is flat or go see Drabbits, who's shop is just a few miles from here in Glendale, CA.

So it's 8" above the roof. Thanks. With a 2" lift, slightly taller tires and a roof rack the clearance will be close under my 7 foot high garage door. It's a dilemma for driving into public garages too.

Just my .02. I have 7' doors currently. I have the Gobi stealth mounted and in the winter when I have my Thule's mounted I am fine but cannot but the boards on and park in the garage. I don't have a lift either.

My truck sits sits in 2.5" lift with 275 tire.
I cannot pull info most of the garages since the rack install. Got stuck in one of the underground ones in downtown this April..

Gobi v Baja help......

Here is my situation I am seeking advice for. I make several trips a year to the coast to Catch, Photograph, and Release sharks from land - also known as Land Based Shark Fishing. I already have the factory receiver rack in the rear that I have a Stowaway swing out receiver rack on order, this will allow me to carry a large cooler on the back and swing it out of the way to have full access to the rear hatch. I have installed the Curt front receiver hitch for my fishing cart that attaches via receiver. I have Yakima core bars 60" wide on the factory rails with Yakima Timberline mounts. Having 60" wide bars allows me to put a Yakima Rocketbox 16 on one side of the bars and have the Yakima folding kayak rack on the other side. It's a d cent system but I think it can be better. What I am thinking is with a roof rack I will somehow be able to have the same set up on top but also have storage space in between the box and the kayak rack for an ex up and rod holders and possibly other items and it would also possibly give me the ability to use the longer Yakima Rocket Box 21 for added storage space.



My questions are:

Will I be able to mount the 60" wide bars to the Gobi or Baja rack to expand that room in the middle?

Am I going to suffer from wind noise when I don't have anything on the rack the rest of the year?

Are the front feet going to damage the roof of my vehicle?

I do plan on using the ladder from either manufacturer to facilitate easier access to the things on the rack, I do not however plan to add any type of auxiliary lighting like a light bar.

I am thinking the Gobi stealth no rise would be a good option if I can make the system work like I want and not have damage to the roof of my vehicle.

My truck is a 2016 SR5 Premium so I will want the sunroof cutout and fill in piece from either manufacturer.

You will have no issues mounting the bars to the Gobi rack.

Yes but you can tune the air dam on the Gobi to reduce/minimize the wind noise. Mine was not that noticeable until I mounted a roof top tent...

Are the front feet going to damage the roof of my vehicle?

In all my research, I've not come across the Gobi feet doing any damage to the roof. Baja did have an issue but I've heard that they've corrected the situation that caused the damaged roof. FWIW, I laid down some 3M Clear Bra to keep the Gobi air dam from rubbing against the roof. You could do this for the feet as well.

From my reading on here there are several accounts of damage, I'm also under the understanding there was some sort of redesign of the feet that sat more inside the rain channel or am I thinking about the Baja rack?

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on one of the Gobi no rise racks for my SR5 along with the ladder and sunroof insert. I have no desire for any led lights or anything like that but want to be able to use a full size Yakima Rocketbox 21 on one side with a Yakima folding kayak rack on the other side with some room in the middle to slide in an ez up and rod holders. I am still doing some research on whether I will need wider bars to accommodate both and still have room in the middle as well as how to fit wider bars onto the Gobi rack.

The only way to get wide bars on the Gobi is to put Thule or Yakima bars over the Gobi. These bars would be. Couple inches higher than the top Gobi bars. And it would look way too "busy" for lack of a better word. I tried it and took them off. The distance between the Gobi bars at front, center to center, is 45 inches. A little less in back. You should be able to get a gear box and j rack type kayak carrier up there.

FYI I placed my order on 5/31 so you can do the math. Almost 3 months exactly. AND I changed my rack to the no-rise option after about 4 weeks of order time & it didn't seem to prolong my build.

just got two emails......

I ordered my Gobi Stealth rack with ladder for my 2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro on July 5th and I just got an email from Gobi and from Trail Duty that my rack will be here next week.

Got a Tepui over the weekend and sold my Mombasa last night. I should have my CVT Batwing early next week. The rig is slowly coming together.

I have my large Pelican cases ready, fuel cans.

I will post pics when it is all together.

This thread is 10x more useful than GOBI's instructions. FWIW I must have dialed in the fairing perfectly because I have 0 noise on the hwy, even with the moonroof shade open. & with the moonroof open its not any louder than it used to be

My Gobi rack is supposed to arrive tomorrow (ordered 6/22 from TD). Hope to get it installed this weekend. Can't wait to see how it looks in person.

My Gobi Stealth Rack with Gobi Ladder came earlier this week and I just opened it today. It is really solidly made!

I will be installing it on with my Tepui tent and my CVT Batwing awning hopefully on Monday.
