DIY: Gobi Stealth Roof Rack/Ladder Install

Looks like you have a gap under each side of the fairing -- that could be causing the whistle.

The center bracket should be out as far as it can be, about 1.5" - 2". The sides of the fairing should be touching the rack. This is how mine is, no gap and no whistle. But there is still wind noise when headed into a strong headwind, which I expected.

I'll have to try and readjust tomorrow. It was a lot harder to do with the light bar on. I had it pretty flush the first time around. I adjusted it when the light went on.

Get your rack yet? Apparently mine shipped on Dec 6th but Gobi cant tell me who has it or where it is. Crazy they send out 3k worth of product without having a tracking system. 3 weeks for delivery is out of this world. They are getting another call today

So I went out and readjusted everything I could with the fairing. And I still have that gap, and a slight whistle.

I'm almost sure, but I haven't checked with Gobi yet, should the fairing brackets be mounted ON-TOP of the light bar mounting brackets. I would check my brothers rack but he didn't order his Setup for a 40" light bar. I guess I could mount them underneath and slide them up in the L brackets but I'm all out of room on the bottom end. The whistle goes away with some Grateful Dead channel on XM!

Yes, I received mine yesterday and it was shipped two weeks prior. With that said I was getting the same story from Gobi about not being able to track it...blah blah. I am in VA and coming from Colorado, two weeks seemed a little longer than logical.

On another note, the box came looking good and I will open it today to insure all the contents made the trip. The only issue I have now is trying to find a day that the temps stay above 40 so the sealant can cure properly so I can install it. :smash:

I decided to just start covering all the areas I thought the whistling might be coming from ( with duct tape) and drive around after each area was covered. The whistling started at about 40 mph, so I could do it around the neighborhood. In my case, it turns out that the little gap below the fairing at the ends wasn't the culprit. When I covered the space between the bottom of the light bar and the top of the fairing, the whistle went away. I took off all the pieces of duct tape, and I filled most of the gap with a weatherseal product from Home Depot. The black rubber pretty much disappears between the light bar and the fairing. Even if it doesn't last forever, at least I know where the problem is.

Personally I would steer away from Gobi, they lie and their customer service sucks so if you can purchase a comparable product elsewhere, I would highly recommend it.

Your post brings nothing to the table. Thanks for the Gobi slam I have never read that before. Do you honestly have nothing better to do then slam gobi everytime you see their name? Just curious because there seems to be a group of you who can't move on. I have a gobi on order for a few reasons. Group buy, I like the looks and it seems like a sturdy rack. So what they got away with putting a couple little guys out of business. The Pats cheated and you still see people rooting for them...

I feel ya because I am number three on that list. I do like the idea of aluminum racks but I do not like the idea of drilling. I know there are some out there that you don't have to but the gobi just looks soooo good as well. I just get sick of the select few that constantly have to talk about how awful Gobi is every post.

Hey guys,

I just noticed today that the top right edge of my Gobi ladder rubs ever so slightly on my Gobi stealth rack when the tailgate is open, and that it's actually worn away a bit of the paint on the rack causing a bit of surface rust.

Any ideas of how to fix this? Of course I can and will take care of the rust and repaint, but any ideas on how to alleviate this contact of metals when the tailgate is open?

When it was first installed, the tolerance was extremely tight at about 1mm gap. Should I move the ladder over?

I know this post is useless without pics, so I'll try to take some tomorrow

I don't think moving the ladder over will give you any extra clearance, you may need to loosen the rack bolts to the brackets and see if you can shimmy it forwards a hair

Is this part of the Trail Duty group buy from the summer/fall? I joined that in early October, and was told by Gobi later that ETA was January. Tried getting more info from Gobi recently without luck. As they say, patience is a virtue

Apparently the TD group buy saves you a few hundred bucks but costs you an extra month or so...

It looks like that'd be pretty hard to do at this point because the rubber gaskets/spacers between the brackets and the rack are super brittle from the elements.

HOWEVER, it looks like I can take my angle grinder to the top right edge of the ladder (the part that sticks up and says GOBI), then take care of the rust and repaint. That should provide me with plenty of clearance without affecting the structural integrity of the ladder.

Thanks for the suggestion though. It got me looking closer at what's going on and helped me come up with a plan of attack :usa2:

Haha where I live I'm pretty sure those rubber pieces were toast after day two in the sun. So maybe now is a good time to replace them with something better? Be careful, I regret bringing a grinder close to my front bumper
Did you check the bolts that hold the ladder to the bracket up top? Maybe it shifted there or maybe the whole bracket that gets stuck to the spoiler? Before you pull out the angle destroyer check those
