Do these key programmers work for us?

I checked it works fine on 4runner 2004 and 2008.

I recently had a locksmith cut/program some keys for our '05 4Runner. He used his $1.5K "Certified Locksmith" key programming unit and what he called "The Toyota Tap-dance". (As outlined in the pdf.)
Turned out that the prior owner must have been a tad forgetful as they had almost maxed out the total number of keys your could add to the security computer. The locksmith had to transfer chips from one of the spare "Valet Keys" to a master key so my wife and I could have a master key each.
So, while a key programmer or the "tap-dance" might work it does not mean you'll be able to add more keys if you have already maxed out your quota. This may be why a locksmith programmed key does not allow the vehicle to start.

Thanks for the links, I just programmed 2 new keys using this method. It worked great and saved me a ton of money for not having to go to the dealership!

This is where I got my keys from. I would recommend getting two and only having ONE cut at a time. I had both cut at the same time the first time around and they were both cut wrong.

Then I went to Jim Barkley in Asheville, NC and had them cut for FREE! That was unexpected

Then programed them myself

1. Take the new key and one master key that can start your 4runner(old key) into the 4runner with you and close the driver's door.(immobilizer light should be blinking)

2. Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key (immobilizer light should be off from the first insertion)

3. open and close driver's door six times (immobilizer light should be off)
Step 2 and 3 need to be done in less than 35 seconds(pdf says 35 seconds)

4.remove the old key. (immobilizer light should come on(steady on, not blinking))

5. insert the new key(immobilizer light should be blinking)

Then just sit there and wait, after about one minute the blinking immobilizer light should go off and you're done.

Same as the above post without having to read all the technically stuff.

Whats the difference between a master key and a regular key? Does it just mean one that can start the car, or what does it mean? Does it mean just make sure you dont use a valet key to try to duplicate the transponder key?

Only a master key can be used to register another (transponder) key, whether it is a master (black) key or a valet (gray) key. A valet key can be used to start the vehicle, but it will not unlock/lock the glove box. You cannot use a valet key to make another key (register the transponder with the vehicle computer).

Edit: Also my masters and valet key are shaped slightly different at the tip.

Yup! This method works great. Had a master key, and made an additional key in about 2 minutes. In case any one else was wondering if it works...

I ordered a couple of the blanks. Has anyone had success with cutting the key at Walmart (or Home Depot) or should I just get a locksmith to do it?
 
Confirmed: Can add a transponder key without a trip to the dealer!

I ordered that "Smart Keymaker OBD for 4C and 4D chips Toyota " and got a bunch of blank transponder keys WITHOUT the dot at the base of the metal key. It didnt work on my 2003 4runner SR5 at all. I would get one beep when I plugged it in, then 30 seconds of silence, then continuous beeping. It's possible that I may have been using it wrong since the instructions are in broken english.

Anyways, after that failed I tried one last time with the "switch method", where you slam doors shut and insert the master key and suddenly it worked!

My 04 truck came with only one key. I brought my registration to the dealer and they cut a brand new key from the Vin number. This key is just a plain key which they cut for two bucks. It will not start the truck since it does not have the transponder but I wanted a nice new cut which has not been worn at all. I then bought a blank 4 runner transponder key off ebay for ten bucks (it had a dot). I brought the newly cut key (no transponder) from the dealer along with the ebay key to Ace Hardware. They charged me two bucks to cut the ebay key using the dealer key I gave them. I then used the key in/out and door open/close method described and it worked fine! Total cost 14 bucks for an extra key. No need to spend any more money.
 
VSC Trac/VSC OFF lights illuminated after using the "Toyota smart Keymaker"

Just as another follow up, today when I went to turn on my car I noticed that the VSC Trac/VSC OFF lights are illuminated. Turns out the problem is that ****ty "Toyota smart Keymaker" I purchased off of ebay trying to communicate with my car's computer via the newer "CAN protocol" instead of the ISO protocol. Luckily someone else also has experienced this problem and wrote it up here:

They mentioned that it can happen from adding a new key at the dealer as well - but this may just be a product of the dealer using an OBDII device to program the new key rather than the manual method described above.

The technical note wasn't as clear as it should have been. This write up was spot on for my 2007 and helped with the lack of clarity or my perception of it.... Out of curiosity, called a locksmith for a program cost. They wanted $125. Unbelievable.

Sorry for reviving an oooold thread, but Skiman, you're a legend- thank you for the instructions! Worked perfectly. I ordered a Sequoia Key/fob off ebay and programmed the fob, then followed these instructions to "learn" the key transponder.
 
Hmmm, not working. Any help?

So I followed the procedure on my 2005 4Runner. The pdf version does not make sense since it starts by telling you to insert the master key and then goes into insert/remove sequence but you already have it inserted. So I tried Skiman's typed instructions.

I insert/remove four times and then leave it in on the fifth time. I open/close drivers door six times and remove the key. The security light never stays on at this point so I don't think there is an issue with the new key I have but something in my sequence. I'm definitely doing it in less than 35 seconds.

When I first put the key in and wait a second the security light goes off. As soon as I remove it to continue the sequence the light is already blinking again. I even tried waiting for it to go off after each insertion.

Does anybody have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Does the door have to be opened to a certain point or just barely? I really don't want to pay to have it programmed but guess I will if I have to.

Help!
