I know a guy says he paint my black running boards for $100.00. Do you think this is a good deal?

Shoot, I just got back from running around town. I wanted to get some other quotes to see if I could get it any cheaper. None, of the area painters wanted to even touch these running boards. They said the paint would never stick to them. It would be off in about six months. Oh well!!! Noloc did you say the dealer will give you a lifetime warranty on the paint?

I don't see how the paint would stay on these boards. Between the flex of the plastic and the expansion/contraction during hot/cold weather, and the constant traffic/abuse of getting in and out of the vehicle, I am not sure that paint would stay on the boards for any length of time.

If the boards are prepped correctly the paint will stay on. The only problem is that the running boards take allot of abuse (Stepping and road debris). I would think that is why Toyota changed to ALL black plastic boards on ALL models. I had painted and installed boards on several mini-vans in the past and there wasn't a problem with paint coming off but they did get beat-up. I installed strips of black skid (anti-slip) tape on the foot contact areas to prevent damage. You will have to be careful with them and people stepping on them.

You could always get these:
They are fairly inexpensive, metal, and hold paint well. Because of the rubber steps, they will not flake off from getting in/out of the vehicle.

These seem to run on ebay once a week for $75-$100, plus shipping.

Yup. Any work performed by the auto body shop has a lifetime warranty at my dealer. I used to own a Solara that they worked on. I took it back about 7 times to have them redo the areas they painted because the clear coat was flaking off. I never had a problem with them doing the work for free.

I painted mine myself....took off the running boards...used a prep/primer (with acid-like action to make the paint stick)...got a can of Dupli-color from Advanced Auto ($5)...and sprayed the boards Toyota Metallic Silver.
Looks great and has not flaked or chipped off yet
total cost was about $10 including the prep, paint, and tape to mask them off

LOL!! I got my painted sliver just like the limited for $50+tax at my Toyota dealer and its been almost a year now and its has not chip or peel! the most importance thing about painting plastic is a good primer and a FLEX coat!! so make sure they put the flex coat over it! also I had to take my running board apart and drop off the pieces that was getting painting sliver (4 end cap and 2 long lower middle strip) so that why they only charge me $50!

I think I am going to paint them myself. Thanks for the info 24runners. I was wondering if I just couldn't do it myself. I called the local toyota dealer, and they don't do any painting just mechanical repair. That is why I bought my toyota in Denver.

did you ever find out by measuring if those side bars don't stick out as far as the stock running boards? I don't know if you were the one I asked a month or so ago, but I know I haven't heard anything since. Just curious.

I actually like the fact that the running boards stick out...they protect the doors from other people's doors in parking lots
I'd much rather have a ding on my running board than in my door! Plus I still have a full can of the Toyota Metallic Silver paint just in case I have to make touch ups.
Standaman, it really wasnt hard at all and the results were very nice...in fact, even if there were runs or anything, no one would ever notice *LOL* no one gets on their knees and examines my running boards *LOL*

24runners, I painted them. I did like you said, went to advance auto and picked up the metalic silver. It matches perfectly. WOW, it looks perfect. The materials were only like 10 bucks. I think I am going to paint my mirrors too. I have the SR5. Thanks a lot for the info, you just saved me 90 bucks. hahaha
