Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Every vehicle is different. But trim packers are designed to trim, just like shims used in carpentry are to make small adjustments once the thing is in place. I usually recommend a 1/4" top mount spacer for the low side on the front (if it is low after everything is installed and settled), or a 10mm rear spacer on the rear low side.

But the majority of 5th Gen suspensions I've sold haven't used any spacers. 4th Gens have a bigger leaning issue it seems.

Very cool. I don't have resources to do it myself so ideally one and done better. same with alignment. If i didn't have to do it twice that'd be better. What's settled? few days, few hundred miles? I'm sure the increase in spring rates helps with mitigating lean as my T4R like I said is fickled it seems

That's the thing though, yours may lean or it may not. So you may actually introduce a lean by adding non-essential parts. It's easy to add a rear spacer, 30 mins for most people at home. But the front is a little more time consuming.

Settled - a few hundred miles. The more you beat the suspension up (hit things hard and fast), the quicker it settles. And by settle, it shouldn't settle any more than 1/4".

Finally, after the parts have been sitting in the garage for six months. Bilsteins set at zero. 302 and 505 coils. No pre or post measurements taken. Going to stuff some 285 KO2s with bronze FN Pro wheels.

I’m moving from Richmond to VaBeach this summer. Let me know when you’re ready to sell those trd matte grey wheels.

Hey. The 505's will be at 1.5" with no rear weight. 220LBs means 220LBS/IN spring rate, and that's per coil, so for every 440LBS on the pair, they would drop 1", theoretically.

Why do you have air bags? What loads are you carrying? You might need the C59-325's, which are 15mm taller than the 505's. Having some rake when empty will give you the ability to load up and have it be level with the weight (depending what weight you've added. With the 3rd row and having kids back there, that puts extra load on those coils of course, plus whatever you're carrying.

That is good to know. I have airbags just because my buddy suggested them for when I have kids in the back doing some offroading at Moab or the like. He pointed out that my stock springs will drop quite a bit, impacting my clearance in the rear. I tow a small trailer about once per year. But given that my kids are still relatively small, I think I'm going to stick with the 505's since I don't expect to get over 440 lbs of extra weight too often.

Thanks for the response. Your customer service is top notch, that you get on here and respond to what are likely very similar questions! Going to purchase them now!

Mike, when will the 2.0 version of the TRD Pro coils be available? Thought it was February? Thanks.

I think I just answered this the other day on here. The 1.0" lift coils have been produced and will be here in April.

The 2.0" lift samples are being made and shipped here for testing. No ETA on those, as we have to see if they will even work properly on those Pro struts.

Came home to some Aussie goodness...

Thanks Mike!

Dammit!!! I've been looking for my Boag's bar mat everywhere!! Did I drop it into your box with the coils???

:becky:

One of my brothers lived in your homeland for a few years a while back, I guess I should have included my guard-kookaburra (stuffed toy, that is...) and rain stick in the pic as well.

Thought you might get a kick out of that pic...

They are red! gdvan01 What springs are they (size and lbs)?

I was waiting on some 6112's but they keep delaying the order, I ordered them in Oct!!! So i have some new 5100's sitting around and I think I will use them and get some springs, I want 2 to 2.25 in front and 1..0 to 1.5 in rear, don't want the ride to be rough as it is a daily driver mall crawler that goes off road once or twice a year.

Thanks Mike!

You can look up weight info in the first post in the thread (and I don't remember) but the fronts are C59-302R, rear are C59-505R.
Essentially a 2.5 inch front, 1.5 inch rear, lift....levels it out.

also, go to Mike's picture album and he has about 30 pics of various setups - that's how I made my decision.
I also have 5100's all around to pair the springs with.

Question on Bilstein 6112/5160 & rear springs

I have a 2014 SR5 and had Bilstein 6112/5160's put on back in November. Newbie - I didn't realize that the rear was not adjustable so that gave me a 2.5" higher front (stinkbug look) and caused my trailer hitch to drop 3" (I tow a small offroad RTT trailer). In December I had them put on my SSO front slimline hybrid bumper and Warn Winch AND they suggested OME rear springs for a constant 400lbs (#2898). To be fair they did warn the ride would be different and it was. I have no additional constant weight, I mainly wanted the rear end higher and to allow for my trailer weight and packed weight.

What I am looking for is a rear spring that will bring my rear end down a bit but still a bit higher than the front, and offer a little better, springier ride. As it is now, it is really hard and jarring. Which spring do you think would be best for that height wise? C59-325 or C59-327?

A few details:
2014 SR5, no KDSS, Bilstein 6112/5160 (not sure what clip is set to but I believe it sits at 2"-2.5" lifted in front), Tires are 265/70/R17 (70% on road driven so not really looking to go to 285's at this time)

Front measurement from floor to top of wheel well across hub = 37"
Rear measurement from floor to top of wheel well across hub = 40.5"

I don't have any plans of adding a rear bumper or tire carrier at this time. My only passengers are dogs but I do need to allow for some weight for when I tow - though trailer is only maybe 1200lbs fully loaded/tent included. When I don't take the trailer I load gear on the roof rack. The pic below shows the current rake.

Thanks!

Thanks much! Yeah, the pictures don't help much they are all 2.5 or 3 inch lol

No worries. I should have added that the R at the end of the part number is for 'red' springs ( I presume, since mine are red...).

Correct me if I'm wrong, Mike.

I'll post pics once installed.

Cool man. My 4runner had those same 2898 rear coils on it when I bought it, and yeah, it was nuts. Those are 318LB springs, really that should have a whole lot of weight on them. I couldn't wait to take them off.

The 325 rear coils should be the right option for you. Your only constant weight I can see is the roof rack. So it all depends on how much weight you think you'll want to add. Every 440LBS or so of weight added on the rear axle will drop the 325's by 1". And if you add tongue weight, it has a bigger leverage effect on it. The 327's are still lighter spring rate than you already have.

How often do you tow? How often do you load up? If not often, I'd say the 325's.

Also, with the height you have in the back now, your rear shocks may be running at full extension at ride height, so that would make the ride feel pretty bad too.

You might also want to actually check the front height setting, just by inspecting the clip count under the coil seat.

Here is my dilema from another post. I had odered a set of 6112's back in October but bilstein keeps delaying the orders, they are now saying Mid May! WTH?Recomendations?
Dobinsons Mike

I have read so many threads about which is the best way to level/lift our 4runners here (hours, days, weeks, months) on the form and have become even more confused on which way to go and I am seeking advice, sorry if this is redundant.

I have a 2017 TRD Off Road Premium with KDSS,2600 miles. The more I drive it the more I like the stock feel of the suspension minus the dreaded nose dive when braking. I do not like the factory rake of the truck and would like it to be more level and raised up over all a little 2-2.5 inches perhaps (hoping for a more aggressive stance)

Here is the situation in where I am seeking advice from experienced members of the forum. I do not do very much off roading, a trip to the beach once a year and a rare trip to the mountains (fire roads), never anything too rough and I live where we get occasional snow and I tow an enclosed motorcycle trailer once in a blue moon. This vehicle is a daily driver so mostly a pavement princess.

I have purchased a set of 5100’s (new in box, have not installed yet). Keeping in mind I want to keep close to stock suspension feel (minus the nose dive if possible) and want to keep tire size of 265 or 275-17 and get rid of the front end rake. After reading the forums I got nervous about going to 1.75/ 1inch back with the 5100’s, I am worried it will be too preloaded and stiff, I thought about doing 0.85 but I am afraid it is just not enough (looks/proportion wise). So since I thought since I have not installed the 5100’s yet I should just order some springs toytec 11260, EMU 884’s 885’s, 883’s maybe (are they softer, like stock), , [Rear] Wheeler's T-13 or SAW’s, or do some kind of spacers and keep the 5100’s set on 0 or not even install them and all and just do the spacers, I think you see my dilemma , too many choices. Just want to keep a nice plush ride (for my daily driving), not go too high 2-2.5 max, 2in would be optimal and not lose all towing capacity (I could always install airbags if need be for that, open to suggestions) and use my 5100 that I have invested in already, Oh and one last thing, I dont want to cause any problems (stering vibration etc). I am not opposed to selling them and do spacers if that is the direction I need to go, I am also willing to spend money and get springs if it helps me accomplish my goals also. If anybody can help me figure this dilemma out it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the help Mike! My 302 and 325's showed up! I am pairing these with my 5100's for now to see how everything is going to work out.

The 325's in the rear even with my RCI sliders, Gobi rack and Ladder, have me sitting at 24" from center of hub. I couldn't imagine running the 3" long travel springs, even though I really want the long travel. Once I get my storage box and fridge setup I will probably have enough weight to switch to LT, hopefully without going up to 25" from center to fender.

Ride is great!! I wish I had after pics but the weather is so bad here right now.

The fronts are 23.5" from center to fender. I ran the 302's at the zero setting on the 5100's and added a 3/8 top spacer. Once the winch goes on and it all settles it should be perfect.
