Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

ctran013

This seems to be the latest stance on their TRD Pro Coils.

I was waiting on those myself and now turned to a complete coil+strut change with Dobinson's parts.

Yep, sorry guys. I'm going to remove the info about the 2" coils and that off the forum today.

I was not really interested in a "lift" but I added a SouthernStyleOffRoad Slimline and a winch, REALLY sagged in the front after that. Hard braking made the truck wallow back and forth and nose dive was extreme. All because of about 120lbs added to the front.

On the advice of Mike at Dobinsons I purchased the C59-300 springs. Paired with Bilstein 5100s. Resulted in a level stance. I didn't get any pics when it was sagging but the springs gave me 2" over what it was prior to installation. As it sits I measure 21 1/2" from the center of the hub to the fender well.

Note*** I purchased new top hats from Monroe, part #907922. Toyota tech REFUSED to install them. Said "These are complete junk. Take them back and get your money back". He re-used the original Toyota top hats, they had less than 8k miles on them.

Thanks Dobinsons Mike

Nice, thanks for the information!! Looks really good. Expect about 1/4" of settling over 500 miles or so on the front.

Interesting about the top mounts. The few different options I've seen always looked about the same. You think it was his opinion, or did they really look kind of junky? I can agree with him that the OE top mounts are really really nice, and I like the nuts they come with.

The top hats "felt" thin and flimsy to me. But, WTF do I know??? :) I'm no more than a shade tree mechanic.

Specifically the service writer said they usually come with a new rubber bushing that was not included. He said overall they were just poor quality.

Oh yeah. I think there is a 2nd design out there that doesn't quite look the same as an OE.

Our new top mounts come with all bushings and nuts, and our struts do too (I heard that 5100's don't?), so we end up tossing out a bunch of top bushings and washers, since we assemble so many here. I guess I should put them up on the website for sale!! LOL

Satisfied Customer

Just wanted to drop by and say that I have really been enjoying my setup that Mike helped me out with.

I went with C59-726 - 100-220LBS heavy load front weight, 2" lift. 385/380mm, 18mm wire, 730LB up front and C59-723 - Stock rear end, 1.25" to 1.5" lift, offset height coils for KDSS leveling. 420/405mm, 17mm wire, 228LB in the rear.

It handles the extra weight when I load up for camping great and I have been impressed with how it feels at high speeds off road since that isn't what I bought this for really but it handles everything I have thrown at it so far with ease. I got just about what is stated above for lift over stock, but it brought everything up 3+ Inches after I installed all the aftermarket parts on stock suspension. Has been a huge help having the extra clearance offroad.

Thanks again Mike.

It's nice to hear from you, and the truck is looking great!!

Dobinsons 2.5 Lift

I like that it is almost level. Went with Dobinsons springs and bilstein 5100s
c59-302 front(2.5)
c59-505 rear(1.5)
Stock Sized tires(falken wildpeaks)

Picture quality is not very good, but just an idea of what this combination looks like. I wanted to keep the stock sized tires for overall functionality. Ride is significantly better than stock. More solid suspension, with almost no nose dive when braking.

Time for my story, I decided to take advantage of the Labor Day sale and so this is my order summary:

Front Springs:
C59-302 - 2.5" lift with stock front end load, 2"

Rear Springs:
C59-675V - Variable rate comfort option, stock rear weight, 3" lift.

Front Strut Options:
GS59-574 - Twin Tube, fixed mount (not adjustable), long travel, adds 1" lift

Rear Shock Options:
GS59-705 - Twin Tube, suits 0-2" lift, softer valving for empty rear ends.

Front Optional Install Parts:
DD59-527K - required with 3" lift, could also be used for 2" to 2.5"

Basically I wanted a 3in lift without falling into an LT setup that would require a whole bunch of other upgrades. It might come later but I figured I had to start somewhere.

I decided to pair my Dobinsons coils & struts with a pair of Dirt King Upper control arms that I had bought earlier on a group buy right here on T4R.

I don't have that many pics of the install but they will be attached to this post reply.

Installation took 2 days, but realistically it could all have been complete within the same day, we had a pretty gnarly heat wave that pushed the temperature to 111F with 100% humidity... We could only work on morning time !

This is why you will see pictures of the 4R with only the front raised :spider:

The right quality difference is there, very well done Dobinsons.

So far I'm loving my setup.

Only two critics :

- Paint on struts is VERY VERY fragile. Do you recommend a specific paint marker to prevent rust from developing ?
- Diff drop kit is still backordered, but I never got notified. Had to call the office to ask if it was maybe shipped on another parcel, but no it's backordered.

Overall extremely pleased so far with my Australian suspension ! :bounce:

Front : 23in hub center to fender
Rear : 24in hub center to fender

The paint on the struts is enamel, never had anyone say that it's fragile before. Enamel touch up paint is what you'd need for them. Where/how did you mark them up? It looks like you left your sway bar touching them in that first photo, before it was reinstalled.

If I have a truck with 75K miles, if I decide to install springs shocks going for a 2” lift, should I just do control arms at the same time? How often do they need to be changed?

Unless you live in a bad climate (rust belt), or the truck is already beaten up pretty good, you can just run the stock arms no problem with a 2" lift. You shouldn't have to replace uppers or lowers. The stock bushings are designed to last many many years, I'd say 100k miles or more.

If you have any questions, send Mike an email. He was able to help me decide which setup would be best for my needs via a single detailed email. It would have saved me a lot of time just emailing him in the first place rather than going through this thread multiple times.

Cant wait for my package!

I have KDSS - based on what you mentioned earlier I think I'll get the KDSS coils in the rear for sure.

But you mentioned that I don't have to get the KDSS-corrected coils in the front, but I'm still a little confused.

1)First - why do the KDSS coils offered have a higher spring rate than the non-KDSS? Is there something about KDSS that requires them? I am planning on adding a front slimline bumper + winch, so should I just get the KDSS coils with the higher rate?

2)I want about 2-2.5" in front and 1" in back - but will be adding about 150-200lbs up front, plus steel rock sliders and full aluminum skids and a roof rack. Should I get this for the rear, assuming it will compress down to 1-1.5"? "C59-725 - Stock rear end, 2.0" lift with 3rd row, 2.25" without, offset height coils for KDSS leveling (similar to C59-325). 430/415mm, 17mm wire, 228LB"

Look at the Eibach kit with 2.75” front and 1” rear including shocks and coils. That’s what I would get with stock weight, except I’m going to add a bunch of weight, so I’m thinking Dobinskns might help me fine tune my lift height more.

Im already lifted and the on the highest setting on my 5100's on the front im still raked with my OME springs in back. I actually bought the truck line this and are looking at other options to bring the front up.
