Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Thanks for that pic and the confirmation Mike. Seems like a no brainer, but it felt a bit tight so I assumed that all the hardware but have been to rearrange the bracket some how. Thanks

Had these installed yesterday. Haven't been able to test off road but from my initial on road experiences, I think I made the right call to go with the 50701s instead of the 50705s (came from the GS59-705). I am carrying 125lbs of gear in the back at all times and while the G59-705s felt great on the road, they were just a tad too soft on trails. Very noticeable when coming off ledges.

With the 50701s, I am noticing the changes in the low speed compression (less road comfort but very minor) but overall its an improvement as rebound feels smoother/controlled. Excited to see how they are on the trails!

Forgot to ask, Crikeymike would you recommend extended rear bumpstops for a 2 + lift? (725 coils w 125lb constant weight)

FWIW I’ve got 2” lift in the rear and run Toytec extenders. Cheap piece of mind. The shop who did the install said I didn’t really need them but I just felt more comfortable running them.

Mike,
So I ordered the lift kit 3/2 and UCA’s and Diff Lower kit.
What order for install do you recommend?

1. Diff kit
2. Front Shocks and springs
3. Rear Springs
4. Rear Shocks
5. UCA

That right?

I would Think you would want to install UCA with front shock and springs since you are already disconnecting it to get them in and out. Just remove them and makes a whole lot of room in there to mount new shock. Then put new UCA in Front is done. Then move to rear.

I'd do all the front parts together. Pull the stock UCA's and struts, change those, then do the diff drop before putting the skid back on. Rear springs then shocks, but that takes a lot less time than the front.

I've been wheeling all weekend with a pretty heavily loaded truck and haven't hit the stock rear bumps yet. Hit my damn head a few times on the side though...

My suggestion to people is that if you do the type of wheeling that you might bottom out often, then upgrading them is a good idea. For 2" there's no requirement to run longer bumps because the shocks work with the same compressed length as stock almost.

I just had the MRR's installed this past weekend on my 2020 ORP. I'm wondering if you have any suggested settings for the High Speed/Low Speed Compression. I played with them a little last night and and currently running the rear at 7 and the front at 5 because I liked the feel of it. I don't have any extras on the truck yet like a roof rack or bumpers so I'm not carrying a lot of weight.

I mess around with mine a lot. I have 4/4 on the front, and I think 4 or 5 in the rear on high and 1-2 on low. I was doing some slow crawling this weekend and tried a few settings but went back to where it is now.

So you'd say that this is your every day road setup then or is that your offroad setup?

Every day setup but I'm in the middle of a Florida to California trip so I'm playing with the settings a lot. Rock crawling, mountain passes, high speed dirt, and highway miles too, so i have all sorts of terrains to try the different settings

When will you be reaching California??

Hey mike, I have a 2019 trd off road oem suspension. The current suspension is basically brand new. I plan to add a winch bumper and winch around 150-200lb. I am just looking to level out the front a little maybe raise it an inch from stock and want red springs. Can I just use the c59-300 springs with my oem struts? Thanks

Alright, finally got out on the trail with the 50701s (put about 1000 miles on them total now with about 100 miles off road).

Mainly rocky forest service roads with a lot of corrugations. Nothing crazy as I just wanted to "break in" the shocks. Running 33 Wildpeak M/Ts at 36.5psi (didn't air down this time) and drove for about an hour on the trail. Compared to the 705's compression stroke, my fiancee and I did notice more of the smaller rocks at low speeds but we both liked how it felt more controlled when hitting larger rocks. When it came to rebound, I would say its 95% of the way there for my driving habits! (this is where I wish I had the MRAs to play around with). The low speed rebound is pretty good but I wouldn't mind slowing/stiffening it a little more. Not saying there is bucking going on but I do feel it could be stiffened a little more for the conditions/trails I like to drive on.

Now I'm excited to rebuild the shocks and play around with the valving. Not sure when that will happen though as these look like they will last a loonggg time.

When it came to high speed, the compression/rebound stroke felt AWESOME (according to my butt dyno). Super happy with the valving there.

Some other tidbits, after an hour on the rocky corrugated road (stree pressure 36.5psi), the twintube 700s were between 120-130F while the rear 50701s were around 150-160F (front gets more airflow). Also found that the monotubes cooled much quicker (as expected) as both dropped down to 90F in the same time (50701s started 20-30F higher).

Overall impressed with the IMS rears and look forward to upgrading my 700s to the IMS 50700s soon!

This is the setup I am thinking of going with. My 4runner is mostly stock with the exception of a 3/4 rack. Only want about a 2" lift and keep the factory rake because I load up the back and rack often for trips.

C59-300 front coils
GS59-700 front struts
C59-325 rear coils
GS59-705 rear shocks
Dobinsons UCAs
PS59-4025 to correct KDSS lean

I am assuming I will not need the diff drop?

I had that exact set up except i had the rear offset coil (725). Worked great and gave me about a 2in lift in the front. Didnt need diff drop. Eventually switched to a 302 front coil as i added a lopro bumper and winch. Also, what kind of trips are you going on and with how much weight? 701s may be the better choice if you pack alot and are on more technical trails.

Mostly just camping and I never do anything too extravagant trail wise. I might just go with the 701s since I plan to build my own storage solution in the back. I dont know how much weight I usually take but it is a full ride, I can estimate the next time I go. Thanks for the tips!

I plan on sticking with 265/70/17 tires, or 255/75/17 or 275/70/17 at the most. To that end I think I don't need much lift to fit those tires, if any. Anyone have opinions or advice on what spring combination I should go with if I pick a Dobinsons suspension? I have about 100 lbs of equipment in the back normally, plus camping gear when going camping. I don't plan on adding anything more than a light bar to the front in addition to the ARB compressor already mounted in the engine bay. This vehicle is both a daily driver and for camping/trails. I was thinking either:

C59-238 (.75"-1") Front
C59-323 (Stock) Rear

OR (what I'm really leaning towards)

C59-296 (1.5") Front
C59-599 (1") Rear

Or is this idea stupid and I should just commit to it and get a
3"/2" lift, UCAs, and 285/70/17 tires?

I'm mainly carrying recovery gear + tools + camping gear and its about 100-120lbs. Can be more depending on trip but the 705s were too soft on compression so the feel when dropping off a ledge/waterfall was not ideal. It wasn't jaunting but just felt like the shock was compressing too easily. On the highway...boy they felt comfortable! I do miss them on the high way but after one trip off road...I can't say I'd want them back lol. Yea you can notice more on the road but its not jarring. If you're just sticking to forest roads, I think the 705s would be fine with a light weight storage solution (under 125lbs). But you never know, you may want to do more technical stuff in the future! Well could just upgrade to 50701s or MRAs at that point like I did lol
