Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Mike,

Quick question on coils. I've got C302s on IMS shocks and I've had to add a good amount of preload + 1/4" top spacers to keep my ride height sitting around 22.75-23" hub to fender. I've got a RSG skid, C4 low pro, and winch. Plus I have a RTT on top part time.

I'm wondering if C354's would be overkill for a setup like this and ride a bit too rough? Maybe just stick with C314s if I swap coils?

Looking ahead for when I decide to rebuild stuff. Shocks are still doing great (about 55K on them now) but I'm sure I'll be rebuilding around 75-80K to keep the ride nice.

Thanks!

Hey man,

You could go to the 354's and bring the coil seat back down and probably not need the spacers either. I have the same on my 4Runner with similar front weight and it rides well. The 314's would still be under a lot of compression, and I had those too. It rode better with the higher rate springs under less tension/preload.

Great to know - I was concerned if they would be too stiff!

C59-300 in the front & C59-325 in the rear. Was going to sell my IMS at first to just use spacers from Westcott but I’m so glad I didn’t. Rides better than the Fox TRD Pro shocks 100%.

Hitting you up here because I have no idea how to PM on the forum. Got some questions about what you may have in stock and what shipping to Alaska would look like on a Dobinson set up. I’m sort of torn between the twin tube set up and the mono. Budget says twin tube but internal want says mono. So would I be missing much if I don’t hardcore off road with the twin tube? I would honestly be only taking it truest off road on hunting/fishing trips. However, some of the roads up here aren’t paved for vast lengths and can be pretty rutty and basically trail like in the lower 48. I’ll send you an email through the site as well in case you don’t see this any time soon.

Hey guys, my name is Mike Tomczyk (aka Crikeymike), owner at ExitOffroad.com. I've been in the 4x4 industry since 1998 and have always preferred to focus on suspension for 4x4's, since it's something you'll feel every single time you move your vehicle, whether driving to work or home, or offroad for the weekend. Everyone has their own build plans for their vehicle, so no same combo of parts is necessarily right for everyone, which is why we offer such a variety - to get you exactly what you're looking for!!

I've been blasted with a lot of questions recently about our suspension offerings for the 5th Gen 4Runners, so I figured it's time to make a specific post about all that we offer. We can lift anywhere from 1.0" to 3.0" with coils and struts/shocks, and we can put together a specific package for whatever you want/need, including the added weight you've added to your vehicle.

Public Notice: Stock/New hub to fender measurements average out to 20" front and 22" rear, and all lift heights are based on that. Many people have 1/2" variance based on age and how the truck came off the assembly line. This video here shows you how to measure your baseline and lifted height:
<br>
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/w7IgfWU1Awo" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<br>
Added Load Weight.
How much extra accessory weight have you added to your truck? Did you add a 150LB front bumper and an 80LB winch? That's constant weight, and will change which coil to buy.
Did you add our drawer system (hopefully) to the back end (150LBS) or a steel bumper with swing out tire carrier (200LBS)? That will also change which coil we would suggest.
You will want to consider that weight before ordering. If you order a heavy load coil without a heavy load, be warned that it won't ride as it's supposed to and the lift height will be incorrect.

Contact me directly if you have KDSS and I can walk you through our options for that. FYI, vehicles with KDSS should add our 15mm spacer (PS59-4025) onto the rear passenger side to correct the lean that usually happens on 1.5" or more of lift in the rear.

Note: Vehicles with KDSS should be lifted no more than 2.5" in the rear or you will probably have a lean that you cannot correct unless you add additional parts like these: Treaty Oak KDSS Spacer Kit

Front Strut Options
GS59-700 - Twin Tube, fixed mount (not adjustable), suits 0-2.5" lift (555mm extended, 432mm compressed), can be used on stock height or lifted vehicle, use with OE or aftermarket coils, coil seat mount same as OE
GS59-574 - Twin Tube, fixed mount (not adjustable), extended travel (22.63" / 575mm extended, 430mm compressed), use with 2" coil to get 3" lift (coil seat height is 13mm higher than OE, resulting in ~1" of lift). Using this with a 3" length coil would give 4", so not recommended. Diff drop kit is required to run these, as CV's will bind at full down travel due to the extended length.
IMS59-50700 - IMS Front Struts - suits 0-3" lift - 560mm extended, 420mm compressed
IMS59-50574 - IMS Front Extended Travel Struts - suits 2-3.5" lift - 575mm extended, 430mm compressed

We stock these parts in Miami, but if we were to run out, or have to make a special order, or custom make some coils, they would ship from Queensland, Australia.

What we get the most demand/requests from customers is our 3" front and 2" rear (leveling the vehicle), or 3" front and 3" rear progressive/variable rate coils with long travel struts and shocks. This will give the most travel and flex with just a few extra components needed. We also have options for 3/3", 2/2", 2/1", 2.5/1.5", or whatever lift height options you want to run. Lately, 2" front and 1" rear is very common (300 and 599 coils).

Added 8/29/17: Here is an album I just created trying to collectively gather all the photos I can of installed Dobinsons products. I'm showing the part numbers used and lift height gained, where possible.

C59-302 (Teal, red or black)
C59-314 (Teal, red or black)
C59-350 (Teal, red or black)
C59-352 (Teal, red or black)
C59-354 (Teal, red or black)

C59-599 (Teal, red or black)
C59-505 (Teal, red or black)
C59-325 (Teal, red or black)
C59-327 (Teal, red or black)

Of course, we would prefer to sell the teal for branding reasons, but so many of you this year have asked us for a color choice, so here you go!!

NOTE: the optional colors are not listed in the catalog, and are not sold on Amazon or Ebay. You have to contact me directly and let me know what you want. They're all the same price as usual. As usual, send me an email to [email protected]

I have a question. C59-331 how high will this spring sit without weight in the rear and how does it ride? I do tow on occasion(car trailer)

You would NOT buy that spring unless you have all of that constant weight on the truck, constant meaning always on the vehicle.

I sell about 4-5 sets of those per year because hardly anyone runs that heavy.

To answer your question - I can't. Don't buy those springs unless you want a 2" lift with at least 800lbs of constant rear weight bolted to the vehicle.

Hey Mike,

So would this work for ~2" lift (and is there any reason not to do the extended travel front shocks if only looking for 2" lift)?
Front:
C59-238 coils
GS59-574 shocks
Rear:
C59-505 coils
GS59-701 shocks

or would I be better off going with C59-300 coils and GS59-700 shocks?

Any need for anything else (extended brake lines, etc)? Stock weight, probably going to add rock sliders and possibly a front bumper (just the center portion and without a winch) down the road...

I'm still kinda feeling things out since I'm still waiting for my 4Runner. First thing I'm doing is having them swap the tires though...

You only get the benefit of the extended travel front struts when you add UCA's, so no, running C59-300's with GS59-700's is the better way to go.

The rest looks good. No, you don't need any other parts with that lift height front and rear.

Any shock and coil upgrade will improve body roll considerably. These vehicles come with very soft coils and shocks from the factory.

People say the IMS rides better with more weight added, and that's common with any suspension. So it won't get worse when loaded or anything like that.
Hey Mike, I ordered IMS kit 700/701. I just received a note that Im getting a 705 revalved to match 701 valving. I looked up the difference between the two, the 705 has shorter extended and compressed length by 10mm. Does this mean I’m getting shorter shocks?

Dobinsons said they took the 705's and changed them into the 701's. They probably changed the top out spacer inside the shock body as well.

Hey Mike,

I'm looking to upgrade from my basic twintube OME set up to the IMS set up from Dobinson. The parts I'm looking at are below:

Front Springs: C59-352

Front Shocks: IMS59-50574 Monotube IFP Shocks 2.5"-3.5" (1" added Height)

Rear Springs: C59-331

Rear Shocks: IMS59-50701 Monotube IFP 0-3" Lift

DD59-527K Diff Drop

My question is about the springs if they're over kill or not. I have a full drawer system, fridge, full rear bumper w/spare carrier, full skids, GOBI rack, RTT, front bumper & winch (I'm sure I'm forgetting something) .

I was leaning towards the heavier load stuff because I went too light before and now I barely have a lift at all. I'd rather have a stiffer ride and not have issues with settlement or rubbing in the future. (my other ride is a lifted ram 2500 so this thing will ride better no matter what, lol)

Am I on the right track or do you recommend lighter springs?
