Dobinsons Suspension - 4th Gen Options

Yes, but you'll be at 3.5" of lift then. The GS59-220 strut has a taller coil seat that adds ~1" of lift height to whatever coils you use.

Thanks Mike! Do you see any problems ie ride, wheel travel etc. running 3.5” in the front with new UCA’s and a 2.5 in the rear?

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend it in the front. You need to leave room for down travel in the struts, or you'll top out too often and it won't ride properly. The most I suggest on the front is 3" lift.

Thanks Mike, I’m sold on Dobinsons[emoji106]

THANK YOU!!!!! wish you would have posted this up last week. this would have changed my spring order. i JUST installed my 302s last night and they have more lift than expected, note i didn't install my 505s yet. so the rear is 5100s w FJs and 1.5 DS.

before: 5100 set at 1.75 and FJ springs was 36.5
new: 5100 set at .5 and 302 now at 38.25

so now the quandary.....set the 5100s at 0 and see what happens or go with 300 and 599s...hmmmmm

but to answer your question. YES the lift numbers i think are on the conservative side. BUT man the springs ride w the 5100 ride GREAT!!!

i just want to get back to this height and look.

That first clip is actually .85", not .50" so you're getting even more than you think.

you can always body lift if you want the extra height(tire clearance)

Rear Spring Dilema

I've been following this thread closely, and I am about ready to pull the trigger on new suspension for my 2008 V6 4x4.

I'm set on going with C59-300 springs paired with GS59-221 struts for 2" of lift up front. 2" should provide plenty of clearance for 265/70r17 BFG KO2s and avoid any need for aftermarket UCAs.

I need help deciding which rear springs to get though. At first, I was thinking C59-505 which provides 1.5" of lift since I prefer some rake over completely level. It seems like most people have paired the rear 505 spring with the taller 302 spring (2.5" lift) up front though. Would the C59-599 spring (1" lift) be a better fit, or should I stick with my initial decision to go 505? I'm also trying to decide between the GS59-637 rear shock or the softer valved GS59-705 since I don't carry too much weight in the back on a daily basis.

I think boostedka is the only truck I've seen running 300s and 599s and had one inch of rake. I think I'd prefer a little more rake than that to avoid squatting when loaded down. Any one else running this set up? JRM was running 599s at first, but it looked like he got more lift out of them than boostedka.

Without any constant weight, I'd suggest these parts
C59-300
GS59-221
C59-505
GS59-705

505's with a bit of rake is a good idea, for when you load up or tow. And the GS59-705 will provide a softer on-road ride, especially since you're running empty.

And also, lots of guys running the C59-302's have a V8, so they need the extra coil height to support the extra weight. This photo attached would be the closest I have saved with about the same lift that these parts would give you.

old set up:
front: FJ springs/shocks DS 1 inch: 36.5 (may have been higher since the shocks were blown and saging)
rear: FJ springs 4R shocks DS 1.5 inch: 38.25

new set up:

billy 5100 set at 0
front: 302: 37.5
rear: 505: 38.5

thanks mike for the help and set up. slightly higher than i wanted in the front but i am ok with it. been driving around for a week now and the springs are starting to settle in. firm but not overly harsh.

i love the stance. its level to me since i base my level on the running board, having a reverse rake running board doesnt look right to me. the pictures dont look level (my son took them, i'll post more up later)

You've got the exact same idea as me. I want to do a minimal lift and thought I was set on 300/599's, but I think I'm leaning toward 300/505 because I don't want the rear to sag when I'm fully loaded down for camping.

Dobinsons Mike would you recommend a 637 or 705 rear shock for my scenario? I've currently got a 50lb bike rack that rides almost full time in my hitch (when loaded 70-90lbs). I'm also about to put a roof rack and awning on as well. Longterm (12-18 months) I'm looking at buying a roof top tent. I feel like 637 would be the best choice and I just sacrifice a bit of comfort upfront. Could I get away with 705's still running the above accessories?

I'd say the GS59-637. Those are better at handling the additional weight and body roll, which is what you'll want when adding that roof rack and RTT eventually.

Not to say you couldn't run the GS59-705 if you want it as cushy as possible, but if it were my truck with a rack and accessories, I'd go for the GS59-637's.

Dobinsons Mike Do you suggest getting extended rear sway bar links with the 505 springs?

I've read that the 2nd gen 4runner rear links are 1" longer and work well, but I'm not sure if the 505 springs necessitate them. I know I could wait and see, but I'd like to get everything put in place from the get go if possible.

It could help with a little bit of travel by adding longer links, but generally with a lower lift height, it's not needed. You could do a flex test with and without the rear sway bar attached and see how much difference there is, then decide if it's worth adding them.

Sway bar links are usually extended half of the lifted height, so with less than 2" of lift, they would only need to go about 1" longer at most.

Is there a Long Travel Rear Spring that delivers 2.5" Lift at stock rear end load?
Yes, it's listed in post #1 of this thread.

C59-675V - Variable rate comfort option, stock rear weight, 2.5" lift. 470/470mm, 16mm wire, 157-230LB variable

Using Rear OE Coil Isolator w/Dobinson Coils

Just wondering if people are pairing their Dobinson coils with the OE rear isolators.

I ask b/c the thickness of the base is almost 1" think and could be contributing to the lift from just the coil resulting in more lift then advertised...

Everyone should be using an OE coil isolator.

For 4th Gen guys, from what I've seen, it's from worn out stock suspension sitting lower than what it was when it's new, and giving 1/2" to 1" variance in lift heights, mostly on the rear.
