Dobinsons Suspension - 4th Gen Options

I’m assuming all the springs are transferable between the standard struts and the mrr’s? I’ve had the ext travel struts on for almost a year now but the mrr’s are tempting me

Noticed in another thread that you went went the 300's up front and the 325's out back...curious, do you have the 5100's up front set at 0 lift, or did you move the clip up to gain some extra lift?
Nice catch! Yes, I ended up going up to the second notch up front. I had intended on going longer springs up front but, got a good deal on some springs in the for sale section.

My guy that installed the shocks actually didn't realize that I had lifted springs and set them at the highest setting originally. The springs were touching the upc's to start with. I had asked him to set them at 0 but called and asked to put them up one notch. Glad I did.

How much was your "complete kit" and did you get UCA's or keep stock? I priced what you had at DobinsonsDirect and total came out to $1620 before tax and before adding the option of them building the front shocks so I don't kill myself with the coil compressor.

I kept my stock UCA's but will be doing SPC's soon. I think I was just under $1k from Mike with the struts assembled. Shoot him an email, he will get you taken care of.

Just installed C59-300/GS59-221 up front and C59-505/GS59-705 in the back. Loving the look and feel of the suspension.

Looks great. V8 or V6?

Looking to swap out my current full OME set with either partial or full Dobinsons. Need some opinions on what would be best - other than buy a different 4runner first.

I've got a 2007 V8 4x2. just call it a prerunner

Currently:
885 Front Coils on 90000 Sport Shocks (Spacer for DS Lean) (22.25" Ctr-Fndr @ empty)
895 Rear Coils with 60004 Rear Shocks (24.25" Ctr-Fndr @ empty)
JBA Upper Control Arms
Both sway bars removed due to stiffness
Brand new OEM Front Lower Control Arms
265/70/17 tires. Might be 285s in another 15k miles when these wear out enough.

So AFTER, I got all this installed, I found out that the 4x2 v8 curb weight is LOWER than that of a 4x4 v6 - 4255 vs 4300, respectively. A 4x4 v8 is 4505. the 885/895 kit is made for a 4x4 v8 with extra load. I'm like 400lbs under the design intent. Yes, it's harsh.

However, We max out (or nearly) the official payload when we go camping/festivals/roadtrips. 4 people and gear for 4 days. Plenty of beer and real food - no backpacking meals here. My wife wants a camper, so we're looking at potentially towing near max towing capacity next year.

That being said, otherwise, this vehicle is stock weight for 320 days a year, and I drive it to work daily. I like the ride height, but I can handle a little lower and understand the height only makes the comfort that much worse.

The 885/895 kit is STILL harsh under max payload. It improves, but not damatically.

Ideas for Change:
Panhard Correction Kit to correct any axle shift (potentially improving the ride itself, to a degree)
and
325/705 with an air bag to compensate on loaded down trips. Wait and see on the front assembly. Don't really desire to do an air bag though.
or
Replace 895 Rear with C59-675V. Wait and see on the front assembly and rear shock.
or
Gut the OME and sell it - anyone want mine? - 10k miles, steep discount.
Front 302/221, or 314/221... Maybe even 448/221? It's 3" on the 4x4 v6, so may be comparable to a softer 2.5" on my 4x2 v8?
Rear 675V with something... I'm not opposed to the long travel shock (and the bump stops, etc) since I've got no option for front wheels getting me unstuck. Keeping both rears on the ground is the best I can do.

I'd like the option of 285/70/17s when my 265/70/17s are worn out enough.

I've got the 675Vs on my truck now, and overall I like them okay.

Not blow your mind good, not bad either.

My biggest complaint is that the coil doesn't stiffen up soon enough.

That is to say, I wish the coil rate increased more quickly as the coil is compressed. I find when loaded with camping gear in the back, it's a bit softer and sitting a bit lower than I'd hoped.

I see your signature lists your lift. When you're loaded down, are you level or reverse rake?

I'm thinking about swapping out my toytec HD2.0 rear springs for some 677v. I don't typically load it down, but I do pull a travel trailer. Tongue weight is about 400#. The truck rides with a slight reverse rake with the tt on it, but has a severe stink bug look and harsh ride under normal driving. Any thoughts on this? Would the 677v still be harsh w/o the tt. Would it be better to go with a softer spring with airbags?

I believe our 677V are only just a bit firmer than the HD coils you're running now, so you may not notice too much difference.

It's going to be hard not to have stinkbug look without the constant weight on the back, then hooking up that much tongue weight. You could try a heavier coil, or add airbags for when you do tow.

It's mainly the unloaded ride I'm trying to address. Would it make sense to go with a softer spring with the airbags? I don't mind the reverse rake, that's to be expected, but would the airbags and lighter springs be enough to handle the weight

If your vehicle is stock weight when empty, you can go with the C59-675V and run air bags to support loads as needed. That's still going to be about 2.5" lift though, so not doing anything for your appearance. This is assuming you have a true 3" lift on the front too.

Can you post pics of the stance of your truck?

Do you know any customers using bags with the 675V? I'm wondering which bag they're running. This may be a good option for me to swap out my too-stiff 895 OME coils without having to redo everything else just yet.

Kyle at Treaty Oak Offroad was running C59-675V with these airbags inside for more than a year. He might still be running them actually, I can't remember if he changed them yet.

I tried to upload pics, but have terrible internet service and couldn't make it happen. As it sits now, with its normal load, the rear is sitting 3.5 inches higher than the front.
Measuring from the ground, the top of the 285/70 coopers are right at 32.5. The bottom of the front fender is 37" and the rear is 40.5"

With the camper hooked up, the front fender is at 38" and the rear is at 36.5". Again, I'm ok with the negative rake when hooked up to the camper, and with the toytec adjustable fronts, I can actually get another 1" or so up and probably at least 2" down. My main concern is the harsh unloaded ride.

I assume that I'll be able to overcome the stink bug look for the most part with the 675v's and I assume they'll offer a better quality unloaded ride. My question is, will they, coupled with the airbags, handle the loaded weight? I've never dealt with these type of bags.

Wow, 3.5" taller in the rear than the front? That seems really excessive. Stock rake is about 2" front to rear, so I'm not sure why you have so much.

The 675V's ride great unloaded, and with that sort of weight you're adding, if it's dropping about 5" when you hook up the trailer, that means with average spring rate springs, you've added 1000LBS in tongue weight, which seems really really high.

Most aftermarket springs are 200-260LBF/IN (per single coil), so it takes double that for a pair of them to drop 1", which is really a hell of a lot. I think maybe something is off with your measurements, unless you truly do have a ~1000LB tongue weight?
